The recent court filings regarding President Donald Trump’s lawsuit against Paramount Global suggest that settlement discussions are moving forward, with a potential resolution hoped for before the upcoming July 4th holiday weekend.
According to Monday’s court filing, attorneys representing both parties have requested a suspension of all legal proceedings until the 3rd of July, 2025. They indicated that the discussions were substantial and serious.
“The Parties respectfully submit that good cause to stay all proceedings exists because the Parties are engaged in good faith, advanced settlement negotiations,” stated the legal representatives during the session with a Texas judge.
As of now, Paramount has yet to respond to inquiries from Fox News Digital. Trump’s legal team also chose not to comment on the case.
Last week, reports emerged indicating that a mediator proposed a settlement of $20 million, which includes a donation to support a presidential library. Specifically, $17 million would contribute towards the library, alongside covering legal fees and broadcasting public service announcements across all Paramount networks aimed at fighting antisemitism. In contrast, Trump previously turned down Paramount’s $15 million settlement offer, insisting on at least $25 million along with an apology, something Paramount found unacceptable.
Trump’s attorney, Ed Paltzik, emphasized, “President Trump is committed to holding those who traffic in fake news, hoaxes, and lies to account. CBS and Paramount targeted the President in an attempt to harm his reputation while committing the worst kind of election interference and fraud in the closing days of the most important presidential election in history. President Trump will pursue this vital matter to its just and rightful conclusion.”
Central to Trump’s lawsuit is an October complaint against CBS News and Paramount, which originally sought $10 billion as compensation for alleged election interference related to a 60 Minutes interview with then-Vice President Kamala Harris. The painful figures later swelled to $20 billion after the case progressed.
This lawsuit claims that CBS News manipulated the editing of an exchange between Harris and correspondent Bill Whitaker, relating to her comments about Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and the Biden administration. Criticism arose as Harris faced mockery for a convoluted response, which was later highlighted in a preview clip on Face the Nation.
When the same question reappeared during a primetime special, viewers noted that Harris provided a more coherent answer. Critics blasted CBS News for what they perceived as deceptive editorial practices aimed at minimizing backlash against Harris ahead of the Election Day.
Earlier this year, the release of the raw transcript and footage by the FCC confirmed that both segments of Harris’s remarks originated from the same response. Notably, CBS News only aired the initial half in the Face the Nation preview, leaving the latter portion for the primetime special.
CBS News stands by its reporting, firmly denying any allegations of wrongdoing.
Paramount’s controlling shareholder, Shari Redstone, who previously recused herself from negotiations in February, has expressed her desire to finalize a settlement. This action aligns with her aim to facilitate Paramount’s ongoing multibillion-dollar merger plans with Skydance Media, which await clearance from the FCC, under the administration previously led by Trump.
In recent months, notable internal tensions have arisen within CBS News, stemming from Redstone’s efforts to closely monitor the network’s coverage of Trump, at least until the merger obtains the necessary approvals. This scrutiny resulted in abrupt resignations, such as that of the executive producer for 60 Minutes, Bill Owens, in April, who cited a loss of editorial independence as his reason for leaving. Additionally, CBS News CEO Wendy McMahon exited in May.
As discussions continue, the resolution of this high-profile lawsuit remains uncertain. The legal implications of this case go beyond the parties involved, echoing a broader narrative surrounding media integrity and the intersection of politics in contemporary journalism.
