On Monday, authorities unveiled a troubling social media image of the suspect in the tragic Idaho firefighter shooting while also confirming the identities of the firefighters who were either killed or injured during the ambush.
The 20-year-old suspect, Wess Roley, was captured on his Instagram story wearing black face paint and camouflage attire, complete with a bandolier strapped around his waist, as revealed during a news conference by officials.
Following the attack, which resulted in the deaths of two firefighters and left a third critically injured, Roley was discovered deceased near the scene. Kootenai County Sheriff Bob Norris indicated that it is believed Roley took his own life shortly after the assault.
The fallen firefighters were identified at the news conference as Frank Harwood and John Morrison. Additionally, the injured firefighter, Dave Tisdale, is currently hospitalized in stable condition.
Officials suspect Roley intentionally ignited a brush fire on Canfield Mountain, situated near Coeur d’Alene, Idaho, to lure first responders into the area. This malicious tactic aimed to ambush the firefighters who arrived to combat the blaze. Sheriff Norris disclosed that Roley possessed a Flint starter, which is believed to have been used to ignite the fire.
Fire crews responded to the blaze around 1:30 p.m., while reports of gunfire began surfacing approximately thirty minutes later.
Audio recordings from the scene reveal the chaos as a firefighter urgently relayed the situation to a dispatcher, stating, “We have an emergency situation” and confirming that there was an “active shooter at a fire.”
The frantic caller reported, “We need law enforcement up here immediately,” specifying the critical condition of the two battalion chiefs, saying, “two battalion chiefs down” and noted that another Coeur d’Alene firefighter was also unresponsive.
Moreover, the caller asserted repeatedly that the fire had been set intentionally to draw the firefighters into danger.
In the aftermath of the ambush, law enforcement initiated a manhunt, utilizing cellphone data to track down Roley. Subsequent investigations led a tactical team to discover his body and a firearm several hours later in a wooded area adjacent to where the fire originated.
Idaho Governor Brad Little expressed his condemnation of the incident, labeling it “a heinous, direct assault on our brave firefighters” and vowed comprehensive state support for the ongoing investigation.
The Governor emphasized the sacrifice made by the firefighters, stating, “They answered the call to protect others and paid the ultimate price.”
As the investigation unfolds, the motivation behind Roley’s actions remains unclear. Sheriff Norris informed the public that no manifesto or further evidence of intent has yet surfaced, leading to a complex inquiry. Federal authorities, including the FBI, are lending assistance to local investigators.
Interestingly, Norris mentioned that Roley once harbored ambitions of becoming a firefighter. He highlighted this information, stating, “We have received information that he at one time wanted to be a firefighter.” However, Sheriff Norris also confirmed that authorities have yet to understand any connection between this aspiration and the violent act committed on that day.
Norris further disclosed that Roley had interacted with law enforcement on five previous occasions, mostly for minor offenses such as trespassing. The sheriff also shared that Roley had communicated with firefighters prior to the shooting regarding the location of his parked vehicle.
Indications suggest that Roley had been living out of his car. Sheriff Norris remarked on the suspect’s transient lifestyle, noting, “We know that he was a transient here,” referring to his time spent in the area throughout much of 2024. However, the reasons behind his presence there or the choice of location for the ambush remain unknown.
He mentioned that Roley had relatives residing in the Priest River area but could not elucidate the rationale behind the choice of Coeur d’Alene for his actions. “We don’t find any nexus to anything else,” the sheriff noted, expressing the ongoing challenge of piecing together the motives behind Roley’s intent.
As the investigation continues, authorities are determined to unravel the complexities surrounding the shooter’s background and motivations. There is hope that a thorough examination of Roley’s vehicle may provide additional insights or evidence as to what led to this tragic event.
This shocking incident has not only devastated the firefighter community but has also left a significant impact on the local residents of Coeur d’Alene, igniting discussions about public safety and the mental health of individuals in distressing situations.
While the investigation presses on, the community reflects on the bravery of the fallen firefighters who responded to the call of duty amidst danger.
As new information becomes available, authorities pledge to keep the public informed in order to prevent such tragic occurrences in the future.
