DHS Urges Media Accountability Over Allegations of Kidnapping by Federal Agents

The Department of Homeland Security has challenged reports claiming that a Los Angeles activist was abducted by federal agents or bounty hunters. These reports suggest that she is being held near the southern border until she agrees to self-deport.

Juliana “Juli” Pelaez Calderon was reportedly seized by unidentified men at gunpoint while on her way to work in South Los Angeles. The incident allegedly took place in an unmarked vehicle, which transported her to the San Ysidro port of entry. There, her family’s attorney, Stephano Medina from the Immigrant Defenders Law Center, claims she was presented with paperwork for self-deportation.

According to Medina, when Calderon refused to sign the documents and requested to speak to an attorney, punitive measures were taken against her. He expressed grave concerns during a news conference on Monday.

“She was taken back to an unmarked van along with other travelers who also insisted on their rights. They were transported to a warehouse, where her basic needs went unmet. This warehouse lacked food, proper supervision, and necessary legal assistance,” Medina stated.

In a statement responding to these claims, DHS Assistant Secretary Tricia McLaughlin rejected the characterization of the event as kidnapping.

“This woman was never arrested or ‘kidnapped’ by ICE. If media outlets had taken the time to inquire, they would have learned that ICE does not employ bounty hunters in making arrests. The narrative attributing these outrageous claims to bounty hunters is completely fabricated,” McLaughlin commented.

McLaughlin further criticized the reports for contributing to a decline in public trust in the media. She emphasized that sensationalist reporting not only misrepresents the truth but also endangers law enforcement personnel, who are currently facing a substantial rise in assaults—reportedly by nearly 700%. This trend creates an environment of fear toward those tasked with maintaining public safety.

Calderon, a mother of three, is affiliated with the Alliance of Californians for Community Empowerment, a community organization advocating for marginalized voices. Reports indicate that she has been allowed to make two calls to her family, but her exact location remains unclear, raising concerns among supporters and advocacy groups.
