NYC Mayoral Candidate Advocates for Communal Living Amid Controversy

Zohran Mamdani, a candidate vying for the mayoral seat in New York City, has stirred controversy and debate as critics label him a communist. Despite the backlash, Mamdani dismisses these accusations as mere distractions.

While such claims may appear exaggerated to some, recent videos reveal Mamdani discussing ideas that resonate with communist principles. In a notable 2021 video, he urged fellow socialists at a conference to staunchly uphold their revolutionary goals, including the call for seizing the means of production.

In another video, which gained traction after being shared by The Gravel Institute, a progressive advocacy organization, Mamdani articulates a vision for housing reform. He argues that the shift from private ownership to communal living is necessary, suggesting the transformation of luxury condominiums into shared spaces equipped with amenities such as common laundry facilities and food cooperatives.

Questioning the Housing Market

During his discourse in the video, Mamdani poses a compelling question about homelessness: Why do so many individuals find themselves without shelter? He points out that the answer does not lie in the lack of homes but rather in the profit-driven motives of developers and landlords.

According to Mamdani, housing serves as a consumer product, much like clothing or cars, marketed by private entities for profit. He highlights a stark contrast wherein ample housing exists for the wealthy, yet numerous poor and working-class individuals struggle to access suitable living conditions.

“It’s not efficient or beneficial for the rest of society,” Mamdani states emphatically. He contends that viewing housing solely through a market lens is detrimental and suggests alternative frameworks should be explored.

The Vienna Model as a Blueprint

In his video presentation, Mamdani references post-war Vienna as a successful model for communal living. He describes how de-privatizing the housing market can positively impact communities, acknowledging, however, that certain residents still contribute to rent for operational expenses in modern Vienna.

Following his examination of the Vienna model, Mamdani unveils his vision for communal living. He envisions spaces that include shared kitchens, laundry facilities, food co-ops, bathhouses, and other community resources. This ambitious plan places emphasis on establishing community land trusts, which would gradually absorb private properties and transition them into community ownership.

Mamdani insists that solving the housing crisis requires a fundamental shift in how society perceives housing. “To end the housing crisis, we must move toward the complete de-commodification of housing,” he asserts.
