Ahead of Independence Day this year, first lady Melania Trump made a special visit to Children’s National Hospital in Washington, D.C. The visit, held on Thursday afternoon, was part of her ongoing ‘Be Best’ initiative aimed at promoting the well-being of children.

During her visit, the first lady engaged with young patients who are bravely battling serious health issues, including cancer and kidney ailments. Together, they participated in various patriotic arts and crafts activities, including rock painting, in the hospital’s garden room.
Nicholas Clemens, communications director at the Office of the First Lady, expressed the heartfelt sentiments shared by the team. He stated, “Mrs. Trump and our team really cherished being with these brave kids and their caregivers.”
Gifts and Smiles
As part of the visit, Trump delighted both inpatients and outpatients by bringing thoughtful gifts. The children received teddy bears, puzzles, books, and ‘Be Best’ temporary tattoos. Clemens highlighted the joy in the children’s faces when they engaged with the first lady, especially when they received the BE BEST teddy bears.
He further remarked, “It was a great reminder of why Mrs. Trump is working so hard to advocate for the well-being of children and youth through BE BEST. We really thank Children’s National for a memorable and heartwarming visit.”
Unveiling the ‘Eternal Flame’
In addition to her interactions with the children, Mrs. Trump helped unveil the ‘Eternal Flame,’ a hybrid Tea Rose sourced from the White House gardens. This stunning hybrid is characterized by high centers and long stems, known for its strong floral fragrance, making it a perfect addition to any garden, as noted by the Missouri Botanical Garden.
About her flower unveiling, Mrs. Trump was accompanied by Dale Haney, the White House Grounds superintendent. They both discussed the new rose bush with Children’s National Hospital President and CEO Michelle Riley-Brown and engaged with the children during the event.

Both inpatient and outpatient children joined Mrs. Trump in the Bunny Mellon Healing Garden, where they placed rocks, pinwheels, and American flags among blooming plants and flowers. This activity allowed children to express their creativity and also connect with nature in a comforting environment.

After the engaging day of activities, the first lady took time to visit a three-month-old child in the heart and kidney unit, sharing a touching moment with the infant and his family. Spanning 7,200-square-feet, it offers a serene and healing environment for patients and their families.
