Acting ICE Director Todd Lyons has expressed strong disapproval towards Representative Pramila Jayapal, D-Wash., following her controversial statement labeling the agency as a terrorist force. She expressed her disbelief that such actions occur in America, stating, “I never in a million years thought that I would see here in America.”
She articulated that the Biden administration owes an apology to U.S. citizens who have been detained, including legal permanent residents and individuals with valid status who have been residing in the country for years without any criminal records. Jayapal described these individuals as being unjustly swept up by masked men who are deporting them.
Lyons responded, referencing a past incident where a purported Antifa terrorist attempted to bomb ICE’s Northwest Processing Center in Washington state. He criticized Jayapal for attempting to shift blame toward right-wing rhetoric while defending an actual terrorist responsible for endangering the lives of detainees and employees.
“Now, she labels ICE officers enforcing immigration law set by Congress as terrorists,” Lyons remarked, pointing out that this rhetoric has coincided with a troubling 700% rise in assaults against ICE personnel.
He voiced his incredulity that a sitting member of Congress would place more value on the protection of violent criminals than on the law enforcement officers who strive to protect the community from genuine public safety threats. According to Lyons, the only necessary apology is from the congresswoman to her constituents.
