The US Ambassador to NATO, Matt Whitaker, emphasized that Iran is at a pivotal juncture following its ongoing conflict with Israel and recent US military actions targeting its nuclear capabilities. As concerns about potential sleeper cells rise, US officials remain vigilant.
Speaking on ‘Sunday Morning Futures’, Whitaker stressed the importance of peace. He also pointed to significant national security concerns stemming from the administration’s border policies, which he believes complicate the situation.
“It’s obviously a very dangerous world, Jason,” Whitaker remarked during his interview with Fox News host Jason Chaffetz. He expressed that while former President Trump made strides toward peace, many challenges persist due to the policies enacted during President Biden’s tenure. According to him, a porous border has allowed over 1,200 Iranian nationals to enter the country, with an additional million individuals entering without detection. This, he argued, poses considerable risks.
Whitaker reiterated Trump’s firm stance on Iran’s nuclear ambitions. He outlined Trump’s clear message that Iran must not acquire a nuclear weapon. At this critical point, he urged Iran to pivot toward peace.
Recent statistics reflect troubling trends regarding Iranian nationals entering the US. Reports indicate that more than 1,500 Iranian nationals were apprehended at the southern border from fiscal year 2021 to 2024. Disturbingly, nearly half of those arrested were released back into the United States.
Specifically, Border Patrol agents recorded 1,504 arrests of Iranian nationals during this period, with 729 individuals subsequently released. This situation raises alarm for national security, as unauthorized entries could amplify threats posed by sleeper cells.
Hours after Trump’s address about military strikes on Iranian nuclear installations, the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) issued a memo about the increasing threat environment in the US. Although it did not identify specific dangers, the alert occurred amidst Iranian officials’ threats of retaliation.
The National Terrorism Advisory System’s latest bulletin highlights the urgency for law enforcement to remain vigilant. The DHS underscored its commitment to keeping the nation secure, especially considering the Israel-Iran conflict’s implications for potential cyberattacks and acts of violence within the US.
In a statement to Fox News Digital, the DHS articulated its responsibility to inform the country about escalating threats. The ongoing tensions with Iran may result in heightened risks, including antisemitic hate crimes.
Whitaker conveyed concern over the implications of Iranian sleeper cell activity in the country. He asserted that this growing threat imposes immense pressure on law enforcement agencies to act with precision.
He advocated for diplomatic solutions, stating, “Iran should come to the table and sue for peace with the United States and Israel.”
