Though Ed McCaffrey won’t be cheering on his son Christian in this year’s Super Bowl, he traveled to New Orleans for a vital cause: promoting safe gun ownership.
The three-time Super Bowl champion has recently teamed up with Colt to raise awareness about the importance of responsible firearm handling. In a recent interview, McCaffrey emphasized, “I’m a strong advocate for firearm safety. If you choose to own a firearm, it’s essential to do so safely and responsibly. That’s my motivation for collaborating with Colt.”
McCaffrey joined other NFL legends like Clay Matthews, Fletcher Cox, and Adam Vinatieri, who are part of Colt’s Safety Impact Award initiative. Matthews took home the award this year, prompting McCaffrey to express pride in being associated with such a noble campaign.
Reflecting on the NFL community, McCaffrey said, “Many athletes I’ve coached and played with own firearms. Given that Colorado is a major hunting and outdoor state, this is a significant issue. Proper training in firearm handling is non-negotiable for anyone who chooses to exercise this right.”
McCaffrey continued, “People might be surprised by how many own firearms. Guns are a right to own—whether for hunting, protection, or sport. If you choose to possess one, it’s paramount to learn safe operation methods. This responsibility extends to your friends and family as well.”
As part of their responsible ownership campaign, Colt is also incentivizing safety with a $100,000 giveaway during the Super Bowl, contingent upon a safety event occurring.
For individuals contemplating firearm ownership, McCaffrey has straightforward advice: “Take a gun safety course. If you’re new to firearm ownership, don’t rely solely on tips from friends. Enrolling in a formal class is imperative for responsible ownership.”
He likened the necessity of education in gun handling to the training he underwent in football, stating, “In sports, attending camps and clinics helped me learn the game. If you’re serious about owning a firearm, invest the time to take a course to understand the operations fully.”
As a proponent of firearm safety, McCaffrey commends Colt’s efforts in creating campaigns that prioritize awareness and education. He believes that the responsibility of gun ownership begins with knowledge.
In his call for better gun safety education, he urges both new and seasoned gun owners to continuously seek out information and training to mitigate risks effectively.
The engagement of public figures like Ed McCaffrey in gun safety initiatives plays a crucial role in fostering a culture of responsible gun ownership. By combining his platform with serious discussions about safety and education, McCaffrey hopes to inspire others to follow suit.
Ultimately, the message is clear: with rights come responsibilities. The journey towards responsible gun ownership demands commitment, education, and a proactive approach to ensure safety for all.
