A University of Chicago professor has publicly criticized her own institution, labeling it as morally corrupt while expressing her commitment to leveraging its influence for advocacy purposes. In a candid address at the Socialism 2025 convention, Eman Abdelhadi, an assistant professor and director of graduate studies, condemned the university for its colonialist policies.
During the event, which united socialists and activists from across the nation, Abdelhadi expressed her frustrations, stating, “Forget about the University of Chicago. It embodies evil and operates as a colonial landlord. I previously held disdain for those investing political energy in such a space.” Her remarks were made during a panel entitled “Revolutionary Accompaniment: Holding Each Other When Things Fall Apart.”
Socialism 2025 promotes discussions surrounding various social movements, including abolition, Marxism, and working-class history. In this engaging atmosphere, Abdelhadi candidly shared her personal transformation regarding her professional landscape.
Abdelhadi noted that many in the Palestine solidarity movement have learned a painful lesson regarding their lack of power. She prompted her audience to ponder, “Where can I actually build power?” Her philosophy centers on the idea that understanding one’s surroundings can lead to effective activism.
Realizing that the University of Chicago is one of the largest employers in the Windy City sparked a shift in her perspective. “I suddenly understood that I work at a significant institution with the ability to organize thousands of individuals around my far-left causes,” she explained. Her comments reflect a strategic approach toward creating a platform for activism and gaining influence.
Abdelhadi elaborated on her position, stating, “I operate within a system that serves as a healthcare provider and landlord among other roles. I view this as potential structural leverage, allowing me to access a vast network of people to advocate for change.” This viewpoint indicates a complex relationship between her professional responsibilities and her ideological pursuits.
The conversation surrounding activism on college campuses has intensified following the recent escalation of violence against Israel. Since the Hamas attacks on October 7, 2023, university environments have seen a troubling rise in antisemitism, with protests and demonstrations expressing extreme hostility towards Jewish students.
Across the nation, several elite institutions have witnessed the emergence of anti-Israel encampments where students have exhibited troubling rhetoric, including chants for violence. These incidents highlight a concerning trend that has left many Jewish students feeling unsafe.
Amidst the turmoil, Abdelhadi asserted that while her movement struggles with power dynamics, it has acquired the
