Just days before an armed assailant ambushed Border Patrol agents in McAllen, Texas, congressional Democrats largely opposed a resolution that condemned the anti-ICE rhetoric tied to recent civil unrest. On that fateful Monday, the situation escalated swiftly, as 27-year-old Ryan Louis Mosqueda allegedly opened fire while equipped with tactical gear and a rifle as agents arrived at a Border Patrol annex.
This targeted attack led to Mosqueda’s death, while a McAllen police officer suffered a gunshot wound to the leg. Additionally, a Border Patrol agent and a staff member sustained injuries, though the Department of Homeland Security confirmed that all three victims are in non-critical condition.
Law enforcement officials view this incident as a deliberate ambush aimed at Border Patrol’s personnel. While Border Patrol and ICE serve different functions, they both play critical roles in enforcing immigration and border policy. The tension surrounding these agencies has been exacerbated by political rhetoric that may lead to violence against law enforcement.
In a concerning turn of events, nearly all House Democrats chose to reject a resolution championed by California Republican Rep. Young Kim. This action had faced backlash, as many Democratic leaders contended it only served to escalate tensions. In fact, Governor Newsom even challenged this move legally, indicating the deep political rift on the matter.
A spokesperson for Newsom stated that the unrest in Los Angeles was a response to Trump’s inflammatory statements. They emphasized,
