A CNN panel on Tuesday morning discussed how partisan actors are politicizing the recent tragedy caused by flooding in Texas. The panelists, including Democratic strategist Chuck Rocha, NOTUS reporter Evan McMorris-Santoro, and former Bush administration official Ashley Davis, expressed concerns that political agendas overshadowed the urgent need for collaboration and preventive measures in the aftermath of the disaster.
McMorris-Santoro emphasized the troubling trend of politicians immediately framing every incident through a political lens. He remarked, “There is a huge movement of people who jump onto everything and try to make it some kind of political lens immediately. It’s very different than discussing the actual journalism necessary to examine what went wrong, who was absent when they should have been present, and who lacked the resources needed to manage such emergencies.”
In central Texas, flash flooding resulted in the tragic deaths of over 100 individuals, including children and counselors from a girls’ camp, as severe weather took hold. This devastating event unfolded after the National Weather Service (NWS) issued multiple flash flood warnings, followed by emergency notices. Concerns arose among critics who claimed that budget cuts and staffing reductions under President Donald Trump’s administration hampered the NWS’s ability to respond effectively to the crisis.
As the situation unfolded, a heated debate emerged on social media and among lawmakers regarding accountability and blame for the disaster. However, the CNN panel dismissed these partisan arguments as trivial distractions that detracted from the pressing challenges the affected communities face.
Sharing his insights on the issue, Rocha warned that partisan conflicts hinder genuine efforts to address the real problems that contribute to such tragedies. “Everybody looks back and asks, ‘What can we do?’ Partisans like me, and others, tend to throw mud at each other, assigning fault. Nonetheless, there are tangible risks at stake, and actions could have been taken to avert this loss. I anticipate a reckoning due to the heartbreaking loss of children involved in this disaster,” Rocha stated.
Furthermore, Rocha proposed the implementation of an alert system similar to the AMBER Alert, which rapidly notifies communities of missing children. He believes that such a system could play a crucial role in quickly alerting residents to impending natural disasters.
Davis noted the stark contrast in responses to the disaster from Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer and House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries. Schumer called for an investigation into various vacancies within the NWS in Texas that are critical for coordinating weather warnings. He asserted that Trump’s staffing decisions and budget cuts were significant contributing factors to the insufficient preparedness.
Schumer highlighted the importance of these roles, stating, “These are the experts responsible for modeling storm impacts, monitoring rising water levels, issuing flood warnings, and coordinating directly with local emergency managers about when to warn the public and issue evacuation orders.”
