Jared Goff, once the first overall pick in the 2016 NFL Draft, enjoyed significant highs and lows during his five-year tenure with the Los Angeles Rams. His journey through the NFL showcases the unpredictable nature of professional football.
Goff’s career took a remarkable turn when head coach Sean McVay assumed leadership of the Rams. During his sophomore year, Goff demonstrated noticeable improvement, leading to Pro Bowl selections in both 2017 and 2018. His outstanding performance in 2018 propelled the Rams to a Super Bowl appearance, marking what many considered his peak in Los Angeles.
Despite early success, Goff’s time with the Rams came to an unexpected end when the franchise decided to trade him to the Detroit Lions. In exchange, the Rams acquired veteran quarterback Matthew Stafford. The decision shocked Goff, who felt blindsided by the team’s abrupt choice to move on from him.
Goff’s experiences are being documented in Netflix’s upcoming docuseries titled “Quarterback,” which follows several prominent NFL quarterbacks during the 2024 season. The anticipation surrounding the premiere of this series highlights Goff’s unique perspective on his journey.
In a recent episode, Goff opened up about the emotions he experienced when he learned about his trade to Detroit. The quarterback revealed that he did not expect to receive such news. Just weeks after the Rams’ last game of the season, he received a call from McVay that caught him completely off guard.
“Three weeks after the last game of the season, I got a call from Sean and really did not expect anything,” Goff shared during the docuseries. “He lets me know they’re trading me to Detroit, and I’m like, ‘Whoa, OK, all right. What the hell? What’s happening?’ I would say about 30 seconds after that phone call, it was on Twitter.”
Goff expressed feelings of betrayal upon reflecting on his departure from Los Angeles. His discontent stemmed from the apparent lack of communication from the Rams’ front office regarding the trade. He wished there had been discussions about the possibility of a move prior to the call from McVay.
“You feel like you’ve been betrayed, or like you’re not wanted,” Goff explained. “Ultimately, it was the fact that there was not a conversation had. There wasn’t like a, ‘Hey, we’re thinking of moving on’ type of thing. There was nothing.”
The former Rams quarterback continued to voice his concern regarding the handling of his trade. He highlighted a desire for more communication and foresight from the team’s executives.
“You wish that it wasn’t such a blindside and that there was some sort of maturity, I guess, to have that conversation and to let me know what was going on and how things went down. It was my first real taste of true adversity, and your career is kind of at a fork in the road,” he said.
While Matthew Stafford achieved Super Bowl success with the Rams, Goff found his footing in Detroit and led the Lions to a commendable 12-5 record during the 2023 season. His ability to guide a struggling franchise toward a successful campaign speaks to his resilience and determination.
In 2024, Goff’s performances earned him another Pro Bowl nod, and he further solidified his role as a key player for the Lions, leading the team to an impressive 15-win season. His resurgence serves as a testament to how players can overcome adversity and emerge stronger.
As Goff continues his career with the Lions, he embodies the unpredictable journey of an NFL quarterback. His experiences remind fans and aspiring athletes alike that success often arises from challenges. The ability to adapt and persevere through difficulties defines a player’s career trajectory.
In sharing his story, Goff offers insight not only into his own life but also into the realities faced by many professional athletes. His journey reminds us that every setback can lead to a new opportunity for growth and success.
