In a surprising turn of events, former Vice President Kamala Harris delivered a commentary during an interview with TikTok personality Kareem Rahma that both deemed too strange and inappropriate for public viewing. The duo ultimately decided to scrap the airing of the conversation, as confirmed by Rahma.
Rahma, known for his engaging series “Subway Takes,” where he gathers perspectives from commuters and celebrities alike, detailed in a recent interview with the New York Times that his session with Harris took place during the summer of 2024 but remains unpublished.
In a clip shared on social media featuring Rahma’s discussion with Forbes’ Steven Bertoni, he expressed relief that the interview did not make it to air, stating that Harris’ remarks were subpar.
“Her take was really confusing and weird – not good,” Rahma recounted to Bertoni, adding that they came to a mutual decision not to proceed with the publication of the footage. “I got lucky because I didn’t want to be blamed for her losing,” he reflected.
Bertoni probed further, responding, “Her take was that bad?”
Rahma confirmed, stating that it was significantly flawed. He recounted her assertion that bacon could be considered a spice, a statement that left him perplexed. The discussion highlighted a notable disconnect between the former vice president’s comments and the cultural sensitivities surrounding food preferences.
Neither Harris nor Rahma responded promptly to inquiries from media outlets seeking clarification on the matter.
In a piece published by the New York Times in November 2024, Rahma, who identifies as Muslim, shared insights about how Harris’ team initially proposed that she express a viewpoint regarding the practice of removing shoes on airplanes.
However, the conversation took an unexpected turn as Harris suggested that bacon could be categorized as a spice. This prompted concerns, particularly since bacon does not align with the dietary restrictions of many Muslims, including Rahma himself. He later conveyed his shock at her statement, calling it unexpected.
“Think about it, it’s pure flavor,” Harris reportedly asserted, as per the unpublished footage revealed by the Times.
The New York Times article detailed conflicting narratives from the Harris campaign, where two senior managers claimed the topic of bacon had come up before. In contrast, Rahma and his team claimed otherwise. In a response, Harris’s campaign apologized for her comments about bacon, suggesting a desire to refilm the conversation, a proposition Rahma ultimately rejected.
Rahma articulated his rationale for not releasing the interview, conveying that he did not wish to offend members of the Muslim community. He expressed a significant interest in addressing Harris about the Biden administration’s policies regarding the ongoing Israel–Hamas conflict.
“It was so complicated because I’m Muslim and there’s something going on in the world that 100% of Muslims care about,” Rahma stated. He emphasized frustration over the shift in conversation to topics like anchovies, suggesting those issues were less relevant and engaging to the community.
Harris’s running mate, Minnesota Governor Tim Walz, had also participated in Rahma’s series leading up to the 2024 elections. In his segment, he discussed practical matters like gutter maintenance, another distinct topic that did not draw the same level of criticism or confusion. Walz’s interview aired in August 2024, illustrating the divergent reactions to different political engagements.
This incident raises questions about how public figures engage with diverse audiences, especially through platforms like TikTok, where direct communication can quickly reach vast segments of younger demographics. Harris’s comments serve as a reminder of the complexities that arise when political figures navigate topics that intersect with cultural sensitivities.
As the 2024 election cycle continues to unfold, how candidates handle discussions of cultural relevance will be critical. Harris’s interaction with Rahma highlights the need for careful consideration of context and audience in political discourse.
