Kevin Durant is set to begin a new chapter as he joins his fifth NBA team. Over the weekend, the 2014 league MVP officially became a member of the Houston Rockets following a historic seven-team trade that reshaped the basketball landscape.
Following the trade, Durant shared his reflections on his time with the Suns while also expressing excitement for his new role in Houston. In a heartfelt message, he stated, “Much love to Arizona. Houston, Can’t Wait!” via a recent post on social media.
However, in a recent open discussion with his former head coach Steve Nash, Durant delved deeper into his experiences, particularly the tumultuous period he spent with the Brooklyn Nets. This candid conversation took place during an episode of the podcast “Mind the Game,” co-hosted by LeBron James and Nash.
During their conversation, Durant reminisced about the complexities that defined his tenure with the Nets. He mentioned, “We had this conversation in Portland, I think, right before a game, and I’m like, ‘Who am I spending my next five years with?’” This was shortly after both had signed contracts extending their commitments.
While Durant felt assured about their professional future, he also observed chaos surrounding the team. He expressed concerns regarding constant changes, saying, “We got GMs going to other teams. We got coaches going to other teams. We got players forcing trades. We bring in Ben Simmons. He’s back. Like, it was just so much stuff going on. A lot of unresolved tensions around us.”
Durant highlighted that although he shared a mutual understanding with Nash, various distractions significantly affected the team’s performance. He commented, “I feel like we were locked in on the same page… Well, we were trying to do something special here. But I felt like your hands were tied a lot because as a coach, you got to deal with so much.”
Nash agreed with Durant’s assessment, stating, “I didn’t get to coach as much as I wanted to.” Their mutual acknowledgment of these issues depicted a landscape fraught with challenges.
Durant went on to reflect on how these distractions prevented him from experiencing the full capabilities of Nash as a coach. He remarked, “That’s what it was. I feel like we didn’t get the full Steve Nash like I wanted… like you probably wanted. I just felt like it was just too many distractions in the way, and you know, you can’t win that way.”
Despite the adversities faced, Durant described his initial experiences with the Nets as memorable and enjoyable. He fondly reminisced, saying, “That first year, man, the most fun ball I had. Some of the most fun ball I had playing my whole life. I enjoyed it. I enjoyed Brooklyn a lot. I loved playing for Brooklyn… but it’s just so much around the guys committed to the situation.” He expressed a sense of disappointment about how external factors affected the cohesion and potential of the team.
Durant joined the Brooklyn Nets in 2019 after his successful stint with the Golden State Warriors, where he was part of two NBA Finals-winning squads. However, his last season with the Warriors was marred by an Achilles injury, which added to the pressure when he arrived in Brooklyn.
During his three-year period with the Nets, Durant played in 129 games, contributing significantly to the team’s performance despite the overarching issues. His incredible talent and experience brought a level of seriousness to the team, serving as a constant reminder of their potential.
As Durant begins his journey with the Houston Rockets, he carries with him the legacy of his complicated past in Brooklyn. His reflections with Nash offer valuable insights into the dynamics of professional sports, where individual talent often clashes with external challenges and organizational changes. The growth and learning derived from these experiences may undoubtedly influence Durant’s approach to this new chapter.
With both players now embarking on different paths, the memories of their collective experiences during a distinct yet turbulent period in Brooklyn will remain a significant part of their careers. As they navigate their next steps, fans and analysts alike will undoubtedly continue to watch their journeys unfold.
