California Congressman Claims ICE Raids Targeting Hispanic Community

Rep. Jimmy Gomez, a Democrat from California, voiced strong concerns about recent Immigration and Customs Enforcement raids, asserting that officers are targeting individuals who are Brown, stating that they arrest anyone who resembles him. His remarks were made during an interview on CNN News Central.

When questioned about an immigration operation that took place near MacArthur Park in Los Angeles, Gomez drew parallels to his experiences in foreign countries where military personnel patrol the streets with weapons. He emphasized that the current actions of ICE officers seem to instill fear rather than focus solely on apprehending criminals or gang members.

He expressed that the agency’s actions predominantly intimidate the Hispanic community, raising alarm over an environment of fear and uncertainty. According to Gomez, ICE’s intention seems focused more on deterring individuals based on their appearance than on targeting actual threats.

Concerns Over Racial Profiling

Gomez highlighted an increasing anxiety within the community, asserting that ICE raids do not prioritize apprehending criminals. Instead, he indicated that the situation appears to target any individual who cannot pass as what one might define as a typical American citizen. Gomez elaborated that this led to the unjust arrest of people, some of whom possess no criminal record.

“The fear is widespread; anyone could be detained, regardless of their legal status. This atmosphere creates distress for citizens and non-citizens alike,” he noted. “We have to confront this deeply unsettling trend.
