Emergency crews in rural Alaska are actively searching for a Bering Air plane that vanished while transporting ten individuals on Thursday. The aircraft went missing while en route from Unalakleet to Nome.
The Nome Fire Department, alongside the National Guard and the Coast Guard, have mounted a coordinated response to locate the missing aircraft. According to the U.S. Coast Guard (USCG), the plane lost contact approximately 12 miles offshore in the Bering Sea.
Data from tracking service FlightRadar indicates that the plane last communicated at 3:16 p.m. over Norton Sound. This information is critical for search teams attempting to pinpoint the aircraft’s last known location.
The USCG has deployed an HC-130 Hercules aircraft from Air Station Kodiak to aid in the search. Ground teams from the Nome Fire Department are conducting searches from both Nome and White Mountain. However, poor weather conditions have significantly hampered visibility and limited aerial search efforts.
“We are currently conducting an active ground search from Nome and from White Mountain, utilizing the most up-to-date information available. Due to weather and visibility challenges, our aerial search capabilities are restricted at this time,” a representative from the Nome Fire Department stated.
The fire department has urged the public to keep those missing in their thoughts. However, they have cautioned against the formation of individual search parties due to weather and safety concerns. Families of the passengers are encouraged to seek assistance through Norton Sound Health Corporation, which has prepared to respond to potential medical emergencies.
While Norton Sound Health Corporation affirmed its readiness to assist the community, further details regarding specific actions or support were not disclosed at this time.
This tragic incident occurs following a series of fatal aviation accidents in the United States the previous week. Noteworthy events included a collision between a military helicopter and a passenger jet near Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport (DCA), and the crash of a Learjet 55 medevac jet in Philadelphia, which resulted in at least seven fatalities.
As search efforts continue, the community remains hopeful for the safe return of those aboard the missing aircraft. This situation raises significant concerns regarding aviation safety and the challenges faced in emergency response operations, especially in remote locations.
The coordination among local fire departments and federal agencies demonstrates the urgent commitment to finding the missing plane and ensuring the safety of all involved.
