FIRST ON FOX: The campaign of New York City’s Democratic socialist mayoral candidate Zohran Mamdani has invested substantial funds into the firm of a prominent media strategist known for shaping the media-buying strategies of former President Barack Obama’s campaigns.
Recent campaign finance records reveal that Mamdani’s team has allocated over $3 million to the Los Angeles-based Debra Schommer Media Group. These funds are earmarked for various expenditures, including television advertisements, TV production, and digital marketing.
Debra Schommer brings more than 30 years of experience in media planning and buying, according to her professional biography. She has previously served as the director of media planning and buying at AKPD Message and Media, a consulting firm founded by Obama advisors David Axelrod and David Plouffe.
Schommer’s resume highlights her expertise in managing and developing media strategies for political campaigns, including pivotal roles in Obama’s presidential campaigns as well as for former Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg, who also pursued the presidency in 2020.
Schommer has garnered respect within the political community for her professionalism and results-driven approach. Axelrod, in an endorsement of her skills, stated that Schommer ensured that every dollar spent on media counted effectively, calling her the best in the field.
Her archived bios on the AKPD website from 2009 to 2015 describe her as a seasoned expert with an impeccable reputation. She is well-known for her dedication and commitment to political campaigns.
As Mamdani’s campaign continues to gain momentum, reports have surfaced about the significant contributions made to Schommer’s firm from various political factions, including the far-left “Squad” members like Jamaal Bowman and Cori Bush, who both faced losses in their recent Democratic primary races.
These politicians have been vocal proponents of progressive policies, such as defunding the police and advocating for reparations, with both spending hundreds of thousands of dollars for Schommer’s media services.
As Mamdani rises to prominence, notable tensions are emerging within the Democratic Party. Moderates express concern regarding Mamdani’s socialist platform, while progressive leaders, including Democratic Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, have thrown their support behind him.
Following Mamdani’s primary victory last month, the Democratic Socialists of America (DSA) underscored that their movement transcends any single individual, election, or organization. They called upon supporters inspired by Mamdani’s campaign to engage with local DSA or Young Democratic Socialists of America chapters, emphasizing a collective fight for progressive change.
In recent developments, DSA leaders are reportedly considering running primary challengers against prominent figures such as Hakeem Jeffries and other House Democrats representing New York City districts. This move signals a push from leftist factions within the party to challenge moderates who do not align with their vision.
Democratic strategist Andre Richardson, a key advisor to Jeffries, firmly countered this initiative. He asserted that their group will impart a significant lesson to Mamdani’s supporters on June 23, 2026, indicating a strong pushback against leftist challenges.
Fox News Digital reached out to Axelrod, Schommer, and representatives of the Mamdani campaign for commentary. The campaign’s future strategies remain closely watched as political dynamics continue to evolve in New York City.
