A former public school educator in South Carolina has been charged in connection with a disturbing pattern of abuse involving a teenage boy. Nicole Ballew Callaham, 33, surrendered to authorities at the Anderson County Detention Center on Thursday, as confirmed by the Anderson County Sheriff’s Office.
Callaham faces serious allegations, including three counts of criminal sexual conduct with a minor and one count of contributing to the delinquency of a minor.
The investigation into Callaham’s behavior commenced in May. Detectives discovered that the alleged misconduct with the victim began in 2021 and continued for approximately two years.
At the time of the alleged abuse, Callaham was employed as a teacher and reportedly engaged in grooming behaviors with the boy during his early teenage years. These interactions included signing the student out of school, transporting him to sports practices, and overseeing after-school activities.
The repeated opportunities for contact reportedly led to a lengthy and troubling pattern of abuse. Evidence gathered through search warrants, as well as cooperation from the victim’s family, supported the claims against Callaham.
The young man came forward after reaching the age of 18. According to authorities, he took time to process the trauma associated with his experiences before making his allegations public.
In addition to the charges filed in Anderson County, the Greenville City Police Department has brought similar allegations against Callaham. These accusations involve incidents that occurred while the victim attended school within their jurisdiction.
Following these serious allegations, Callaham resigned from her position with Anderson School District Five.
The charges have left the local community reeling. Parents, students, and educators alike struggle to comprehend how such a betrayal could occur within a trusted educational environment. The safety of students remains a top priority for the community as this situation develops.
The sheriff’s office maintains that the investigation is ongoing. Authorities encourage anyone with additional information about the case or similar incidents to come forward. This call for action underscores the importance of transparency and accountability in educational institutions.
The legal proceedings against Callaham will likely draw significant attention. As the community processes this breach of trust, discussions about the importance of safeguarding students in schools have become more urgent than ever. Educators and parents are reflecting on strategies to better protect students and prevent similar situations in the future.
