WWE Evolution marked a significant milestone in women’s professional wrestling, and for Raquel Rodriguez, the event holds a special place in her heart. Back in 2018, Rodriguez was training at the WWE Performance Center, dreaming of one day stepping into the ring alongside the famed superstars of the sport.
On an upcoming Sunday, she will have the opportunity to defend her tag team championship alongside Roxanne Perez in one of the event’s most challenging matches. They will compete in a fatal four-way tag team match featuring formidable opponents, including Charlotte Flair and Alexa Bliss, along with Kairi Sane and Asuka, and the talented duo of Sol Ruca and Zaria.
In an exclusive interview with Fox News Digital, Rodriguez shared her thoughts on the significance of WWE Evolution. She recalls her excitement watching the inaugural event, which showcased a beautiful representation of women in wrestling, sports, and diverse cultures from around the globe.
“This is an incredibly exciting time for all women in WWE and for those invested in wrestling worldwide,” Rodriguez stated. “When Evolution first occurred, I was at the Performance Center, anxiously hoping to be a part of it. Witnessing that event was a beautiful moment for representation of women in wrestling.”
Rodriguez emphasized how important it is for the next generation of female wrestlers. “Having a women’s Evolution 2 allows more women from our past and future to step into the spotlight, creating an unforgettable show. It’s a thrill to know that our supporters, including young girls and their families, will be cheering us on. I walk into this event as a proud WWE Women’s Tag Team Champion and plan to leave with the titles still in my hands,” she proclaimed with enthusiasm.
Rodriguez’s passion for professional wrestling runs deep within her family. Her father, Rick, competed as an independent wrestler in Texas during the 1980s and 1990s, and her childhood was filled with memories of watching him perform in the ring.
Reflecting on her childhood inspiration, Rodriguez noted the impact female wrestlers like Chyna and Beth Phoenix had on her. However, it was her father’s influence that truly ignited her passion for the sport. “While many decorated women wrestlers inspired me, my father was my primary role model. I often looked up to strong female figures in wrestling, but my dad’s guidance has been invaluable throughout my journey,” she revealed.
Rodriguez credits her father with shaping her career and decisions. As she reminisces, it is clear that the bond between them is strong. “I consider myself a daddy’s girl through and through. His support and sacrifices have played a crucial role in where I am today,” she shared. “From a young age, I dreamed of wrestling, and even now, he keeps me grounded as I navigate this industry.”
With an impressive résumé that includes multiple tag team championship reigns, Rodriguez is well-prepared for the upcoming matches. She has held the title six times, with four championships alongside Liv Morgan, who is currently sidelined due to injury. In the interim, Perez has joined her as a new partner.
Despite the challenge of teaming up with someone new, Rodriguez remains confident. “While we haven’t teamed up before in a match, I believe in Roxanne’s abilities and our potential to defend our titles successfully,” she stated. “This match will be a test, but I see the other teams facing similar challenges, given their limited experience as a cohesive unit.”
Rodriguez is aware of the strengths of their opponents. She thinks the team of Alexa Bliss and Charlotte Flair may not have had sufficient time to gel, similar to Asuka, who is returning from injury. “While they are acclaimed athletes, just returning to action may impact their teamwork,” she commented.
As for Sol Ruca and Zaria, Rodriguez acknowledges their recent success in NXT. “I’ve seen their impressive performances, and they are both incredibly talented. However, they seem to have been working in their own lanes, which may hinder their synchronization during our match.”
Overall, Rodriguez feels a strong sense of experience and confidence going into the match. “Even with the limited time Roxanne and I have been together, I am the most experienced player in the women’s tag division. My confidence comes from that experience and our shared dedication to win.”
As WWE Evolution 2 approaches, excitement is palpable, not just for Rodriguez but for the entire women’s wrestling community. The event promises to create more opportunities for female wrestlers to showcase their talent and resilience.
Rodriguez’s journey underscores the evolving landscape of women’s wrestling, emphasizing that the sport’s future is bright. With prominent figures like her at the forefront, fans can look forward to thrilling matches that celebrate diversity and strength.
As the event draws near, Raquel Rodriguez remains focused on her goals. She is ready to defend her championship title and inspire the next generation of wrestlers. With each match, she continues to represent strength and determination in a sport she loves.
