Noem Defends Federal Response to Texas Flooding Amid Political Criticism

On Sunday, Kristi Noem, the Secretary of the Department of Homeland Security, addressed accusations regarding the federal response to the recent catastrophic flooding in Texas. She contended that many criticisms stemmed from political motives, labeling remarks made by a Democratic lawmaker as “absolutely despicable.”

Response to Accusations

Noem made her remarks during an appearance on “Fox News Sunday,” where she responded to accusations that the Federal Emergency Management Agency’s response was delayed. She specifically addressed claims from Senator Chris Murphy of Connecticut, who alleged that President Donald Trump and Noem had terminated FEMA employees during a critical period for flood victims.

“You know, this memo and this criticism, I think, is all politics because I was there,” Noem stated. “I was there and every time somebody asked for something, we said, absolutely, it’ll be here as soon as possible and it’ll be done.”

Swift FEMA Action

Noem emphasized that she, alongside over 700 FEMA workers, promptly arrived at the scene after a call with Texas officials. The Coast Guard also quickly deployed resources in response to the disaster, reinforcing the swift actions taken.

The floods that struck central Texas around July Fourth have been described as devastating, resulting in at least 129 fatalities, with more than 160 individuals still unaccounted for in Kerr County.

Historic FEMA Response

Noem declared that the response effort was unprecedented, claiming it as “the fastest in history that FEMA has ever responded to a disaster.” She pointed to a significant contrast in FEMA’s operations during the Trump administration compared to the current Biden administration. Noem advocated that this time FEMA “operated how President Trump wanted it to operate.”

Collaborative Management Approach

“I’m very proud of the fact that we didn’t go there and manage it,” Noem expressed. “We went there and allowed the local officials to manage it, to run it. The state did a fantastic job. We’re there to support and give them what resources they need.” This collaborative approach was essential in mitigating the effects of the disaster.

Refutation of Claims

When questioned about Murphy’s assertions that victims’ calls to FEMA went unanswered due to staff firings, Noem condemned his statements as false. She labeled the claims “an absolute lie,” reiterating that no employees had been let go and that all resources were devoted to assisting those in need.

“That’s what I think is so disingenuous and horrible about the situation. Nobody was fired, no contracts were ended, everybody was there answering calls and doing all they could to help the people of Texas,” Noem asserted.

Political Exploitation of a Tragedy

Noem expressed indignation towards what she perceives as the politicization of the tragedy, particularly by Democrats who, according to her, are manipulating the circumstances for their political gain. She emphasized the importance of truth amid such trying times.

“It’s a disservice not just to the people of Texas and these families that are going through grief right now, it’s a disservice to our country,” she stated firmly.

Seeking Accountability

Following Noem’s remarks, Fox News Digital reached out to Senator Murphy’s office for his response, but no immediate comments were provided. This silence left an air of contention regarding the differing perspectives on the federal response.

Legal Challenges for ICE Operations

Noem also addressed a separate matter concerning a federal judge who issued a temporary restraining order against significant ICE operations in Southern California. She criticized the judge’s ruling as “ridiculous” and confirmed that the federal government plans to appeal the decision.

“We always built our operations, our investigations on casework, on knowing individuals that we needed to target because they were criminals, because they had conducted violent crimes against individuals in their communities or had overstayed their orders, had violated federal laws, and that is always how this is done,” Noem explained, underlining the rationale behind the enforcement operations.

A Call for Unity and Truth

Noem’s defense of the federal response to the Texas flooding shines a light on the contentious intersection of politics and disaster relief. As the situation evolves, the focus remains on aiding those affected while navigating the complexities of political narratives surrounding the event. The local and federal response continues to evolve, with calls for unity rather than division as the priority for all involved.
