No one in Butler, Pennsylvania, with its population of 13,000, ever envisioned that their peaceful town would bear witness to an assassination attempt on a presidential candidate. However, on July 13, 2024, gunman Thomas Mathew Crooks unleashed chaos at a rally for Donald Trump, an event that would resonate far beyond the picturesque farm landscapes of western Pennsylvania.
This shocking incident began when a bullet grazed Trump’s ear, a moment that could have easily resulted in tragedy if circumstances had been slightly different. In the aftermath, Republicans rallied around Trump, leading to his re-election amid significant national support. Many supporters, along with Trump himself, echoed sentiments of divine intervention, believing that he was spared to continue his mission to save America.
Yet, residents grapple with the profound shock of their small town being thrust into the limelight for such a violent act. The attack has cast a long shadow over Butler’s identity as a serene farming community.
“Having something like this put Butler on the national and international stage is truly disheartening,” stated J.D. Longo, the mayor of nearby Slippery Rock, conveying the sentiments shared by many in the area. “This is not the reputation anyone in Butler or western Pennsylvania desires.”
Longo also highlighted the community’s essence, emphasizing, “This is a place where families can thrive, where a good life is within reach.”
The community’s heart breaks most for the family of firefighter Corey Comperatore, who tragically lost his life when Crooks aimed and fired at Trump.
“Many of us hold onto hope that, despite the horror of that day and the devastating loss of life, Butler County will be remembered for how we came together in the wake of tragedy, how we supported the Comperatore family, and how we stood united as a community,” reflected one resident.
There is undeniable pride in how Butler responded to the aftermath of the tragedy. Nevertheless, some residents struggle to move past the memories of that day.
“It certainly placed us in a difficult position,” remarked Zach Scherer, a local volunteer who participated in multiple Trump campaigns. “There are those who cannot forget, who think about this often.”
Erin Autenreith, a seasoned Trump campaign volunteer from Glenshaw, Pennsylvania, echoed similar sentiments. “Our thoughts remain with Butler,” she shared.
Having attended the annual Butler Farm Show for years, Autenreith affirmed its wholesome atmosphere, recalling memories of cows being milked and enjoying delicious vanilla milkshakes. “We looked forward to it every year, and now, it feels irrevocably linked to the events of that day,” she lamented.
The Butler Farm Show, which hosted the Trump rally, is now striving to dissociate itself from the violent act. Members of the media are prohibited from filming on the premises, aiming to restore the show’s reputation as a community event.
“This incident has left a mark on a beautiful community,” Autenreith expressed. “Butler is a mere 45-minute journey from downtown Pittsburgh, a charming place that many families adore.”
Despite the tragedy, Butler’s residents believe that the shooting did not break their community’s spirit. In the days and weeks following the event, the community banded together, providing help and support to the Comperatore family and those affected by the violence.
“The greater Pittsburgh area is resilient – we are the tough cookies the president refers to,” stated local resident Bob Crankovic, highlighting the determination of the community.
Lucie Roth, who sat just behind Trump during the rally, didn’t hesitate to show her unwavering support. “I returned to his very next rally, standing right behind him once again,” she said, demonstrating the resolve of those in Butler to stand together even in the face of adversity.
