Authorities conveyed this information in a press release on July 7.
Online Confusion During the Holiday Weekend
Unbeknownst to law enforcement, a Reddit user shared his own harrowing experience shortly after the 4th of July weekend. He claimed that he was mistaken for Decker after hiking alone on July 4. He and a friend had initially set out together, but when his friend departed, he continued up the 889 Bear Creek trail solo the next morning.
Upon returning home, he was surprised to learn through a friend’s text about the reported sighting of a suspect in the area. The user reflected upon this eerie coincidence, stating, “We thought we stayed in the area with a killer.” It wasn’t until news updates delivered more details that he realized someone had reported him as a potential suspect.
Unforeseen Consequences of Misidentification
The hiker, who identified himself as Nick, spoke to local news outlet Idaho News 6. He revealed he was unaware of the intense search for Decker while he was camping and hiking nearby.
Nick recounted the startling moment when his friend alerted him, saying, “There’s a manhunt for a killer that was in the campground with us.” He described feeling a sense of dread, realizing he might have unknowingly shared space with a notorious fugitive.

After connecting the dots, Nick contacted local authorities. They met him at his workplace for a friendly interrogation that lasted about half an hour. He later shared with Idaho News 6 that he understood the concerns that led to the report. It is clear that those who noticed him did what they believed was right amid a chilling search for a dangerous individual.
“In my opinion, I don’t realistically look like… that guy,” Nick stated, emphasizing that the sighting must have been a mistake based on mere appearance and distance. He admitted the situation had caused disruption in his personal life, particularly at work, highlighting the anxiety it created.
Active Search for Travis Decker
Multiple local and federal agencies have joined forces in the active search for Travis Decker. Authorities confirmed that he drives a 2017 white GMC Sierra with Washington license plate D20165C.
On June 2, a Chelan County sheriff’s deputy discovered Decker’s truck parked at Rock Island Campground. The tragic discovery of the girls’ bodies soon followed, located 75 to 100 yards away down an embankment.
According to court documents, each of the girls had a plastic bag over their heads and showed signs of having their wrists zip-tied. Additionally, deputies found two bloody handprints on the tailgate of the pickup. These gruesome details have fueled law enforcement’s urgency to locate Decker.
