Republican Lawmakers Propose Bill to Revoke National Education Association’s Federal Charter

Republican lawmakers are set to introduce legislation aimed at revoking the federal charter of the National Education Association, known as the NEA, amid rising concerns regarding its political focus.

On Tuesday, North Carolina Representative Mark Harris and Tennessee Senator Marsha Blackburn announced their plans to present the National Education Association Charter Repeal Act in their respective legislative chambers. This proposed bill seeks to annul the federal charter of the largest teachers’ union in the United States.

This legislation stems from recent reports indicating that the NEA has shifted its priority towards political advocacy rather than educational issues during its recent annual meeting.

Harris expressed his concerns, stating, “From branding President Trump a fascist to promoting divisive gender ideologies and neglecting the fight against antisemitism, the NEA has transformed into nothing more than a partisan advocacy group.” He further asserted, “Since the NEA is evidently not prioritizing students, parents, or teachers, it’s time to revoke Congress’ endorsement of this problematic organization.”

Following his announcement, Harris confirmed via his X account that ten additional Republican representatives from the House have co-sponsored the bill.

Efforts to clarify the situation led Fox News Digital to reach out to both Harris and Blackburn for further insights into this legislative push.

Amid this unfolding scenario, education activist Corey DeAngelis recently uncovered NEA convention resolutions that highlight several political objectives aimed at countering President Donald Trump’s administration.

Among the notable items, one improperly spelled the term “fascism” in a resolution that pledged to “defend against Trump’s embrace of fascism by using the term facism [sic] in NEA materials to accurately represent Donald Trump’s policies and actions.” This incident has drawn significant attention and critique.

In another resolution, the NEA categorized efforts to dismantle the Department of Education as an “illegal, anti-democratic, and racist attempt to dismantle public education in favor of wealthy interests.”

Fox News Digital also reached out to the NEA for their commentary on this emerging legislative issue.

Previous Legislative Attempts

This is not the first time the NEA’s federal charter has come under scrutiny. In 2022, Wisconsin Representative Scott Fitzgerald and Indiana Senator Jim Banks attempted to strip the NEA of its congressional charter

As discussions around this new bill unfold, many educators and parents will be closely monitoring the legislative process and its implications for public education across the country.

Moral and Educational Debate

The NEA has long positioned itself as a champion for teachers, although critics argue that its current trajectory compromises educational integrity. This ongoing debate underscores a broader struggle between educational advocacy and political activism.

As the National Education Association continues to navigate these challenging waters, the efforts by Republican lawmakers to repeal its federal charter spotlight a growing divide on educational priorities in America. Moving forward, it remains to be seen how this legislative effort will evolve and how stakeholders in education will respond.

In the midst of this contentious atmosphere, one thing is clear: the conversation about the intersection of education and politics will continue to dominate headlines and shape the future of the teaching profession.
