New York City is grappling with an alarming rise in antisemitism, which has subjected Jewish residents to unprecedented levels of hatred and violence. Every elected official, including Democratic mayoral candidate Zohran Mamdani, bears the responsibility to assure their constituents of safety and security. However, Mamdani’s past comments and affiliations have raised significant concerns about his commitment to protecting the Jewish community.

The statistics are alarming and tell a sobering story. New York State recorded a staggering 1,437 antisemitic incidents in 2024, representing an 18 percent increase from the previous year. This figure marks the highest number of antisemitic incidents registered in any state nationwide. Moreover, antisemitic assaults experienced a shocking 52 percent increase, contributing to nearly one-third of all antisemitic assaults across the country.

These statistics encapsulate a broader narrative of fear. Consider the 12-year-old facing bullying in Queens or the Orthodox couple enduring harassment in broad daylight on the streets of Brooklyn. Furthermore, Jewish college students found themselves trapped in a library, targeted by a hostile mob banging on the windows. This untenable environment of intimidation comprises harrowing experiences of harassment directed toward Jewish New Yorkers at their synagogues, schools, universities, businesses, and simply on the streets.

Mamdani’s Past Raises Red Flags

In light of this disturbing trend, it becomes even more essential to analyze Mamdani’s past inflammatory rhetoric and his associations with radical anti-Israel groups. As a college student, he took the initiative to establish the Students for Justice in Palestine chapter at Bowdoin College, an organization widely recognized for its extreme positions on college campuses. While serving as an assemblymember, he also sponsored the “Not on Our Dime Act,” which sought to prevent New York-based charitable organizations from donating to Israel, claiming it would fund what he termed as war crimes. These actions included cutting off essential support for services like ambulance response, food security, and others vital for civilian safety.

Adding to the concerns is Mamdani’s refusal to condemn extreme calls for violence, such as the chants for “Globalize the Intifada,” a slogan advocating for unchecked violence against Israel, Jews, and Jewish communities worldwide. Multiple opportunities have arisen for Mamdani to clarify his stance on such rhetoric; unfortunately, he has opted to remain evasive rather than address the issue directly. Discussions with public figures and media outlets have yielded little, as he has not articulated a stance, effectively leaving voters in the dark.

The Need for Answers

It is imperative that any candidate seeking a mayoral position provides a clear and comprehensive plan to combat the escalating wave of antisemitism. New Yorkers, particularly those within the Jewish community, deserve transparency regarding the specific measures candidates will implement to address this rising tide of hate. More importantly, they must also disclose what actions they will not take, which could potentially jeopardize the safety of Jewish citizens already facing considerable challenges.

The community’s expectations are neither unreasonable nor excessive; they reflect fundamental requirements for anyone aiming to serve in a public office. Candidates ought to answer pressing questions transparently during this electoral season, rather than relying on private reassurances that can lead to distrust.

However, the onus for accountability does not rest solely on Mamdani’s shoulders. A multitude of candidates are competing in this mayoral race, and the Jewish community expects each of them to prioritize the safety and security of their constituents.

Antisemitism: A Present Reality

Antisemitism is no longer a distant concern; it poses a tangible, pressing danger to Jewish Americans. Over recent months, chilling instances of antisemitism have emerged, manifesting in alarming ways not just in New York but also in cities like Harrisburg, Pennsylvania, Washington D.C., and Boulder, Colorado.

With real threats to safety surfacing, the need for a committed mayor is paramount. New Yorkers must elect someone who demonstrates through action—a commitment not merely expressed through rhetoric—the steps necessary to prevent violence from spreading across the city. Policymakers must ensure that the unique challenges of the Jewish community receive the same diligence, care, and respect granted to all New Yorkers.

A Call from the Community

The Jewish community, along with all New Yorkers who cherish tolerance and security, demands forthright and unequivocal answers. Protecting against hate and violence transcends political lines; it is a collective obligation for public servants to uphold and ensure the safety of all citizens.
