A 28-year-old man tragically died this week after being struck by lightning while participating in a golf tournament in New Jersey.
Simon John Mariani, a resident of Franklin Lakes, New Jersey, endured the fatal strike while playing the 15th hole at the Ballyowen Golf Course on July 8. According to an obituary, he died unexpectedly on Monday.
Brian Delia, a fellow golfer and eyewitness, reported seeing the lightning strike about 300 yards ahead of him. He explained that Mariani was playing in an all-day tournament when stormy weather suddenly rolled in. Delia even filmed the ominous cloudy sky shortly before the lightning struck.
Delia recounted the harrowing moment, stating, “I started filming, and he was right in front of me. All of a sudden, the lightning strikes, and I ended the video recording. We immediately just started heading back to the clubhouse.”
Once the lightning struck Mariani, his father rushed to his aid and provided mouth-to-mouth resuscitation. Other golfers also performed CPR as they awaited the arrival of emergency services. Following these efforts, Mariani was transported to a hospital.
Crystal Springs Resort, which manages the 250-acre golf course, acknowledged that the storm developed rapidly that day. The staff reportedly activated an alarm to alert golfers to seek shelter. However, Delia mentioned that his group did not hear the warning alarm.
A spokesperson for Crystal Springs Resort indicated that the family requested no further information be shared about the incident last week. They reiterated that the resort will continue to honor this request, showing respect for the grieving family.
At the time of the incident, Mariani was an associate at MTS Health Partners in New York City. He graduated from the University of Notre Dame in 2019, earning a bachelor’s degree in accounting and economics. In 2024, he obtained a master’s degree in finance from the same institution.
Outside of his professional pursuits, Mariani was passionate about family and engaged in various hobbies including painting, photography, and baking. His love for the outdoors extended to activities such as beach outings, boating, fishing, hiking, golfing, and skiing.
Mariani’s untimely passing leaves behind his parents and two sisters, who are mourning the loss of a beloved family member.
This tragic event comes on the heels of several recent lightning-related fatalities. Notably, Olympic medalist Audun Groenvold lost his life after a lightning strike just last Saturday. Additionally, in Texas last month, Spencer Loalbo, a father of three, succumbed to injuries sustained from a lightning strike while golfing.
