Tragedy Strikes as Three Veteran Deputies Die in LA County Training Facility Explosion

The Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department has confirmed the identities of three deputies who lost their lives in a catastrophic explosion at a training facility in East Los Angeles. This incident stands out as one of the most devastating tragedies for the agency in years.

The explosion, which occurred shortly after 7:30 a.m., tragically ended the lives of Deputies Joshua Kelley-Eklund, Victor Lemus, and William Osborn. These dedicated officers were part of the Special Enforcement Bureau’s Arson Explosives Detail. They were remembered as courageous individuals committed to serving and protecting their community, as described by the Sheriff’s Department.

Sheriff Robert Luna expressed the heavy heart felt within the department, stating, “There are no words to express the pain and sorrow we feel. These heroes represented the best of our Department, exemplifying courage, integrity, and selfless service. This is not only a heartbreaking loss for their families, but for all of us.”

Details Surrounding the Incident

The fallen deputies had a combined total of 74 years of dedicated service to the community. Following the incident, the LASD released a statement that celebrated their impressive service histories. Each deputy had a strong dedication to their roles and considerable specialized training including high-risk assignments.

Deputy Joshua Kelley-Eklund: A Committed Public Servant

Detective Steven Kelley-Eklund joined the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department in 2006. He served at various facilities before his promotion to Field Training Officer at the South LA Station. In 2016, Kelley-Eklund advanced to Detective within the Narcotics Bureau, where he handled major investigations and arrests. His commitment to public safety was evident when he became a certified Arson and Explosive Investigator in 2022. He leaves behind his wife Jessica and their seven children.

Deputy Victor Lemus: A Distinguished Officer

Detective Victor Lemus began his career with LASD in 2003, serving at both Twin Towers and Century Station. Lemus flourished as a Senior Training Officer and Detective, known for his expertise as a decorated Baker to Vegas runner and a K-9 handler. In 2023, he joined the Arson and Explosives Unit. He is survived by his wife, Detective Nancy Lemus, their three daughters, and numerous family members who also dedicate their careers to working with the LASD.

Deputy William Osborn: A Veteran of Investigative Work

Detective William Osborn had a long career in patrol, investigations, and training, graduating from the academy in 1992. Osborn was particularly known for his deep passion for investigative work and served as a trusted leader within the bomb technician community. He joined the Arson and Explosives Unit in 2019 and was well-regarded for his mentoring capabilities and expertise.

Investigation into the Explosion

Authorities reported that all three deputies responded to a separate call the day prior, assisting local police in Santa Monica with the seizure of explosives. Current investigations are exploring the exact circumstances surrounding the explosion, including whether the deputies were examining explosives at the time of the blast.

The LASD is continuing their investigation into the incident. Homicide detectives are seeking a search warrant related to the Santa Monica location. With the cooperation of the LAPD bomb squad, the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, and the FBI in Los Angeles, officials are conducting thorough searches to identify any potential explosive materials linked to the incident.

The LASD confirmed, “At this time, it is not determined if the devices found yesterday have any correlation to today’s critical incident.” In response to the ongoing threat, local authorities have evacuated residents at the complex and are actively working to locate temporary shelter for those displaced.

Honor and Remembrance

The Sheriff’s Department is currently working on details surrounding a memorial service to honor the fallen deputies. The families have requested privacy during this heartbreaking time, with LASD committing to supporting them and their personnel throughout this challenging period.

In a statement, LASD conveyed, “The family asks for privacy and compassion during this tragic time. The Department will continue to support the families and our personnel throughout this difficult time.” As the community grapples with this tragic loss, tributes continue to pour in honoring the service and sacrifice of these brave deputies.
