Historic Railway Carriage Blossoms into a Unique Airbnb Experience

A retired wallpaper designer has ingeniously transformed a 19th-century train carriage into a one-of-a-kind luxury accommodation at a former railway station in England.

Nigel Brooke, 68, resides in an old train station where he undertook the ambitious restoration of a Great Western Railway carriage, originally built in 1895. Although train service ceased in the area during the 1950s, visitors today can reserve a memorable night in the vintage carriage for approximately $260, thanks to Brooke’s investment of $35,000 in the restoration.

As Brooke shared with news agency SWNS, “It is beautiful, and it’s quite unique here.” The exterior has been meticulously repainted in authentic colors based on historic railway documentation, while the interior boasts period wallpaper, a cozy bed, and a charming stove.

Brooke played a pivotal role in designing the interior decor, stating, “I designed all that decor, but it was led by original pieces that I found during the restoration.” The carriage originally serviced a metropolitan railway line before it was decommissioned in 1940, falling into disrepair.

Reflecting on its past, Brooke recalled, “It was just chocolate brown everywhere. It became a workman’s carriage, static somewhere.” He purchased the carriage for about $10,000 and arranged for its transport to the station, where it now rests on concrete walls that align with the platform, providing step-free access for guests.

One side of the carriage was covered in metal, likely added in the 1950s or 1940s for protection. Despite its age, the original oak framework retained its structural integrity, a fortunate find for Brooke. “What I had to do was take each piece off carefully that was rotten and replicate it and rebuild it, using the original bits,” he explained. “It’s quite early, 1895, for a carriage – it’s getting toward disintegration at that age if they’ve not been restored,” he noted, adding, “This will be good for a long time now.”

Brooke acquired the station back in the 1980s when he was in his 30s, calling himself lucky for such a historic property. “I was quite lucky to acquire such a nice old historic building,” he reflected.

The Airbnb listing has attracted an increasing number of guests who appreciate its unique charm and rich railway heritage, as reported by SWNS. Many visitors are drawn to the nostalgic experience of staying in a piece of history that has been thoughtfully restored.

In an effort to expand his hospitality offerings, Brooke plans to convert the station’s former waiting room into an additional guest space complete with an ensuite bathroom. He elaborated, “I may turn one of the waiting rooms into an Airbnb with an ensuite, so when people stay in this carriage, if they’ve got friends they can stay in the waiting room at the station house.” This expansion could enhance the overall experience for guests by providing additional accommodations.

As Brooke summed up, “People absolutely adore it. There’s a lot of history here.” The combination of unique architectural features and the surrounding historical context makes this destination incredibly appealing for travelers seeking an extraordinary getaway.

The restored railway carriage continues to garner interest from tourists eager to experience a luxurious night in a vintage setting. With its thoughtful design and historical significance, this unique Airbnb stay promises to offer visitors not just a place to sleep but a glimpse into the past.
