CNN host Dana Bash raised eyebrows on Thursday regarding Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas and his role in swearing in several officials from the Trump administration in recent weeks.
“Please raise your right hand again and again and again,” Bash remarked. “That’s what we heard from Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas, who appears to be the go-to justice for swearing in members of Donald Trump’s cabinet. He has overseen these ceremonies at the Supreme Court, the White House, and even at his own residence, amid growing scrutiny involving him and his wife, a long-time conservative advocate, who have drawn significant attention from President Trump.”
Justice Thomas recently swore in Attorney General Pam Bondi at the Oval Office on Wednesday, an event attended by a packed audience of her family and friends.
Bash commented on the unusual nature of Thomas’s involvement, stating, “Not that there’s anything untoward about doing it; it’s just what it symbolizes. I don’t recall cabinet officials having their swearing-in ceremonies officiated by any Supreme Court Justice before.”
Historically, such swearing-in ceremonies are typically conducted by the Vice President of the United States. CNN analyst Joan Biskupic noted, “It’s traditionally been done by the vice president. This marks a significant shift in tradition.”
Bondi, who previously served as a Florida prosecutor and state attorney general, made a pledge during her confirmation hearing last month to steer a Justice Department that operates independently from political influence or bias.
“If confirmed, the partisanship and the weaponization at the Justice Department will be eliminated,” Bondi assured lawmakers.
In her confirmation hearing, Bondi expressed a commitment to restoring integrity to the Justice Department, stating her determination to end political influence in law enforcement measures.
Earlier this month, the Trump administration filed a lawsuit against Illinois and Chicago over sanctuary laws, reflecting a broader strategy under her leadership to address political controversies relating to the department.
Justice Thomas has been the subject of numerous reports over the past year. Investigations by The New York Times and various media outlets revealed trips that Thomas and his wife, Virginia, took to Bali in 2019, which were funded by conservative donor Harlan Crow.
In response to the growing scrutiny, Thomas has defended his actions. He stated that he has adhered to all disclosure guidelines during his time on the court.
The recent series of swearing-in events raises important questions about the intersection of the judiciary and executive branches. The choice of a Supreme Court Justice for such ceremonies could imply closer ties between the judicial system and the political landscape.
As the nation navigates complex legal and political challenges, the actions of prominent figures like Justice Thomas will continue to draw attention and provoke discussion among legal experts and the public alike.
