Following a viral moment captured by a Jumbotron during a Coldplay concert, Astronomer CEO Andy Byron found himself at the center of a public relations crisis. Reputation and crisis strategist Molly McPherson, widely known on TikTok for her insights, predicted Byron’s upcoming resignation and offered her assessment of the unfolding PR debacle.
In a now-famous social media clip, Byron and Kristin Cabot, the company’s head of human resources, were featured on a concert ‘kiss cam.’ The two attempted to hide their faces, ducking behind stadium seats as the crowd erupted in laughter.
Coldplay’s lead singer Chris Martin took note of their awkward behavior, joking that they were either engaged in an affair or simply very shy. This playful quip added to the spectacle, but the broader implications for Astronomer were serious.
Days after the concert, Astronomer released a statement reinforcing its corporate values and announcing a formal investigation into the matter. While some viewed this response as necessary, McPherson had a different perspective.
In a TikTok video shared shortly after Astronomer’s statement, McPherson expressed skepticism about the decision to go public. She remarked, “If I were running crisis management from the inside, I would not have released a statement. Even though Chris Martin exposed the CEO and the chief people officer, it was still a private matter.”
