FIRST ON FOX: Eric Flores, an Army veteran and former federal prosecutor, officially announced his candidacy for Congress on Monday in a pivotal House district located in southern Texas. His campaign aims to attract voters in an area considered a key battleground for the upcoming 2026 midterm elections.
In a video shared exclusively with Fox News Digital, Flores emphasized the need for dedicated leadership. He stated, “We need fewer politicians and more fighters who will put our communities first.” This sentiment underlines his commitment to serve the interests of South Texas.
Flores declared his intention to stand with former President Donald Trump, pledging to fight for the needs of South Texas residents each day in Congress. This stance could resonate with a constituency that has shown signs of shifting political dynamics.
Flores is entering the race in Texas’ 34th Congressional District, which stretches along the Gulf Coast from just south of Corpus Christi to the U.S.-Mexico border. This district encompasses notable cities such as Brownsville and extends westward to parts of McAllen.
The National Republican Congressional Committee has targeted this district as part of its strategy to reclaim seats in the House during the 2026 elections. The House GOP’s campaign arm is focused on defending the narrow majority it currently holds, making this race particularly significant.
The political environment in this district has been shifting towards the Republican Party. Former President Joe Biden won the district by a margin of 15 points in the 2020 election. However, in a remarkable turn of events in 2024, Trump emerged victorious, winning the area by nearly five points.
Despite these Republican gains, last year’s Senate election revealed a complex political landscape. The district favored Democrats, as now-former representative Colin Allred bested Senator Ted Cruz by a margin of six points, indicating that Democratic support remains strong in certain demographics.
Republican strategists view incumbent Democratic representative Vicente Gonzalez as vulnerable in this cycle. Gonzalez, who is serving his fifth term in Congress, narrowly defeated former Republican representative Mayra Flores in both the 2022 and 2024 elections. His recent victory was achieved with only a 2.5-point margin, indicating potential weaknesses.
Eric Flores has made efforts to connect with the National Republican Congressional Committee, showcasing his commitment to winning this competitive district. As a Spanish speaker raised in the Rio Grande Valley, he aims to engage with diverse community members effectively.
Flores’ background as an infantry officer in the U.S. Army, where he achieved the rank of captain, complements his political aspirations. His military service includes commanding troops during Operation Guardian Support along the U.S.-Mexico border, enhancing his credibility among constituents concerned about border security.
In addition to his military experience, Flores served as a former assistant U.S. attorney, where he was instrumental in prosecuting cases related to cartel activities and human trafficking. His efforts in law enforcement have earned him accolades, including two U.S. Attorney’s Awards for securing convictions of notorious fugitives.
Flores also has experience in the legal realm as a municipal judge in Alton, Texas. Currently, he is a partner at a statewide legal firm, leading the litigation department. In this role, he supports municipalities and school districts across Texas, highlighting his commitment to public service.
This dedication to service is echoed in Flores’ personal reflections. He expressed concern over policies that have negatively impacted local communities. “Every day, I see how broken policies hurt our community. Enough is enough. Politicians put themselves first while the Valley gets left behind,” he stated.
The candidate emphasized the importance of principled leadership, reflecting on Trump’s impact in the region. He declared, “President Trump stood up to the insiders and fought for places like ours: the communities the career politicians always forget. We cannot lose this opportunity. That’s why I’m running for Congress. We need bold, principled leadership, and we need it now.”
As multiple Republicans vie for their party’s nomination in the upcoming primaries scheduled for March, Flores is currently viewed as the only major candidate. His unique military background and comprehensive legal experience position him as a strong contender in this pivotal political landscape.
While the race heats up, the potential implications for both parties in the 34th Congressional District will be closely monitored as voters head to the polls in 2026.
