Jake Retzlaff Transfers from BYU to Tulane Amid Controversies
Jake Retzlaff, a former quarterback for BYU, has officially announced his commitment to transfer to Tulane University, marking a significant transition in his college football career.
According to reports, including one from ESPN, Retzlaff’s move comes after a rigorous background check conducted by Tulane, which included consultations with their Title IX office. As he joins the Tulane program, he will begin his journey as a walk-on, facing competition for the starting quarterback position.
Background of the Transfer
This decision follows Retzlaff’s formal withdrawal from BYU on July 11. He departed the university as a result of the football team’s decision to suspend him for seven games, following a violation of the school’s honor code.
Retzlaff communicated his feelings about this challenging decision through an Instagram post.
He stated, “After a lot of prayers, reflection, and conversations with those I trust, I’ve made the difficult decision to officially withdraw from BYU and the BYU football program.”
He added that BYU provided him with growth opportunities extending beyond football. He expressed gratitude towards his teammates, coaches, and fans for their unwavering support during his time in Provo.
Controversial Underpinnings of His Departure
Retzlaff’s decision to leave BYU comes on the heels of a legal battle involving a woman who accused him of rape, an allegation he firmly denied. He insists that their encounter was consensual.
In a recent development, both Retzlaff’s legal team and his accuser sought a joint dismissal of the lawsuit in Salt Lake City’s 3rd District Court. Reports suggest that this dismissal was filed with prejudice, preventing the plaintiff from reinitiating the lawsuit.
Given BYU’s strict adherence to the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints’ honor code, the standards for student behavior are notably rigorous. Engaging in premarital sexual relationships violates these principles, potentially complicating Retzlaff’s standing at the institution.
Moving Forward with Tulane
While Retzlaff is not a member of the Mormon faith, he was still required to adhere to BYU’s honor code. With one year of eligibility remaining and aspirations for a potential NFL career, moving to Tulane may provide him the opportunity to compete fully in the upcoming season.
At Tulane, he will play under the guidance of head coach Jon Sumrall, a figure with whom he has a past connection.
