Former President Donald Trump recently called for California Senator Adam Schiff to face imprisonment, sparking intense political discourse. In a series of posts on Truth Social, Trump invoked declassified documents suggesting that officials from the Obama administration manipulated intelligence to foster the narrative that Russia was attempting to influence the 2016 presidential election.
Trump stated, “Adam ‘Shifty’ Schiff is in BIG TROUBLE!” on Sunday evening. He accused Schiff of falsifying loan documents, claiming, “He once said my son would go to prison on a SCAM that Schiff, along with other Crooked Dems, illegally ‘manufactured’ in order to stage an actual coup.” The former president insisted that his son was innocent, describing the situation as an American tragedy. He concluded that Schiff should face prison time for his alleged real crimes.
Schiff currently finds himself under scrutiny after the U.S. Federal Housing Finance Agency (FHFA) alerted the Department of Justice in May about multiple instances where Schiff allegedly falsified bank documents and property records. These actions reportedly aimed to secure more advantageous loan terms affecting a Potomac, Maryland, property between 2003 and 2019.
The FHFA oversees entities such as Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac and highlighted those concerns in unflattering terms.
As of Monday morning, Schiff’s office had not responded to requests for comment from Fox News Digital.
Trump continued to criticize Schiff on Tuesday, referencing an investigation by Fannie Mae’s Financial Crimes Division which purportedly linked Schiff to possible mortgage fraud. Trump remarked, “I have always suspected Shifty Adam Schiff was a scam artist. And now, I learn that Fannie Mae’s Financial Crimes Division has concluded that Adam Schiff has engaged in a sustained pattern of possible mortgage fraud.” He accused Schiff of falsely claiming his primary residence was in Maryland to secure lower mortgage rates.
Schiff has dismissed the claims as part of Trump’s longstanding personal vendetta against him. He tweeted earlier in July that since he was the lead manager in Trump’s first impeachment, Trump has constantly called for his arrest. Schiff characterized Trump’s allegations as baseless political retribution that will not deter him from holding the former president accountable.
Trump and Schiff’s contentious relationship is well-documented. During Trump’s first administration, Schiff played a key role as the lead House manager in the impeachment trial and was vocal about alleged collusion between Trump’s 2016 campaign and Russia. Following Trump’s electoral victory against Hillary Clinton, Schiff became a prominent figure in ongoing investigations into Russian interference.
Days after Trump accused Schiff regarding his mortgages, Tulsi Gabbard, the former Director of National Intelligence, announced the declassification of documents that allegedly provide compelling evidence showing that President Obama and his senior national security team had engineered the narrative surrounding Russian collusion to undermine Trump’s presidency.
Gabbard elaborated, stating, “These over 100 documents indicate how some of the most powerful figures in our nation, including President Obama, made a deliberate choice to create a politicized piece of intelligence aimed at subverting the American people’s will.”
Schiff has consistently defended his actions amid these controversies. In fact, he faced censure from the House in 2023 due to his repeated assertions regarding Trump’s collusion with Russia. Over his political career, Schiff served in the House from 2001 until his election to the Senate in 2024, and he acted as the ranking member of the House Intelligence Committee before becoming its chair.
During the Mueller investigation into the alleged collusion between Trump’s campaign and Russia, Schiff publicly advocated for Donald Trump Jr. to be subpoenaed. Ultimately, the Mueller report concluded there was no evidence to support any collusion between the Trump campaign and Russia, a finding that continues to fuel debates among political opponents and supporters alike.
The ongoing feud between Trump and Schiff highlights the broader issues of political accountability, integrity, and the use of investigations as leverage in partisan battles. As both figures prepare for potential future elections, the implications of these allegations and their political ramifications will continue to resonate across the political landscape.
