EXCLUSIVE: Inna Vernikov, a Republican councilwoman in New York City, has shared her deep concerns regarding the potential mayoral candidacy of socialist candidate Zohran Mamdani. In an interview with Fox News Digital, Vernikov elaborated on how such a victory could dramatically alter the landscape of the city.
Vernikov stated, “I think it’s a very dangerous situation we’re in. I think we’re looking at a chaotic city with lawlessness,” as she speculated on what New York City might resemble if Mamdani secures a win in November.
According to Vernikov, a wave of affluent residents and middle-class families may flee the city under Mamdani’s leadership. “I think we’re gonna see a lot of the wealthy and the middle class escape New York City,” she warned.
Having emigrated from the Soviet Union as a child, Vernikov poignantly recounted her experiences standing in line for basic necessities. She drew a stark comparison between Mamdani’s proposed policies and the oppressive elements of communist Russia.
Vernikov further articulated her concerns, saying, “Think about going into the DMV. Think about going anywhere, and just remember how much red tape and incompetence you’ll see going to any of these agencies, and that’s what Mamdani wants for New York City.” She criticized his support for government-run supermarkets, arguing, “That is completely counter to what America is supposed to be. America was built on the free market economy, free marketplace of ideas, the idea of meritocracy and capitalism, and competition. Capitalism, while not perfect, is founded on the principle of competition.”
Under Mamdani’s potential administration, Vernikov fears that New York City would spiral into a “dangerous,” “chaotic,” and “lawless” place.
Mamdani has met with House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries in New York, amid ongoing discussions about Democratic endorsements. The party remains divided on whether to support Mamdani despite his history of controversial remarks regarding economics, policing, and Israel.
Numerous experts, including some who spoke to Fox News Digital earlier this month, have suggested that a Mamdani triumph could create a significant reckoning within the Democratic Party.
Julian Epstein, a former Chief Counsel for the House Judiciary and a Democrat, stated, “There is just no way that moderate and centrist Democrats can accept socialism, a cultural revolution, and an ever-bloated welfare state plunging us into bankruptcy. If he wins, it will not only damage the national brand of the party but may also signal the potential fragmentation of the party as we know it today.”
Vernikov echoed these sentiments, asserting that Mamdani embodies the Democratic Party of today.
“The problem with the Democratic Party is that it’s no longer the Democratic Party of JFK,” she said. “It’s the Democratic Party of AOC and all the radicals. It has radically moved to the left, and many Democrats face this dilemma: Do we support this candidate or distance ourselves from him? Some have even faced threats of physical violence from progressives in the primaries, leaving them politically cornered.”
The ongoing dynamics of this election and its implications for New York City serve as a pivotal moment in local and national politics. With Mamdani positioned as a central figure in the debate over the future direction of the Democratic Party, the stakes could not be higher for voters as they approach the polls.
As the election draws closer, the urgency for informed discussions about the implications of Mamdani’s policies becomes increasingly apparent. The outcome may very well redefine the identity of the Democratic Party and influence the political landscape for years to come.
Fox News Digital reached out to Mamdani’s campaign for a response but has yet to receive a reply.
