I thought something was off with her,” Griner explained. “She acted like a child, but she was a grown woman. She had burn marks all over herself, and I found out after the fact that she was selling videos online of her husband and her child together. And that’s who they had me in a cell with.”

Griner recalled the harsh treatment her cellmate faced at the hands of others due to her crimes. “There’s not a lot of torturing from inmates with girls on the women’s side. But if you are in there for something like that, yeah, you’re going to get tortured. And they would put their cigarettes out on her and make her sleep at the door too.”

This brutal environment created a sense of unease for Griner, who expressed her frustration with the prison system for not segregating inmates by their offenses. She stated, “I was mad about the prison not being separated by crime, as I didn’t want others to associate me with that one.” Griner reflected on sleepless nights, saying, “I didn’t really sleep at night because she would be over there singing and doing weird stuff at night.”
