Fencer Who Protested Trans Athlete Reflects on Policy Changes Impacted by Trump’s Executive Order

Controversy Surrounds Team USA After Fencer’s Viral Protest

Stephanie Turner, a women’s fencer, experienced a significant personal struggle after demonstrating her protest against a transgender competitor during a USA Fencing event in late March. Initially, she believed that her actions would have dire consequences for her career. However, her decision resonated strongly with many and took center stage in the ongoing national debate on transgender participation in sports.

Following near four months of discussions and a congressional hearing, Team USA recently updated its policy regarding transgender athletes on Tuesday. This revision aligns with President Donald Trump’s executive order aimed at preserving women’s sports as exclusively for biological females.

Turner expressed her feelings about the changes, stating, “This has caused so much of a hindrance to my life personally, and it’s caused me so much emotional turmoil. I’m just glad this is over, and many women and girls appreciate this victory.” Turner spoke to Fox News Digital, reflecting on the unique pressure she faced.

The Impact of Political Support

In her statement, Turner conveyed gratitude towards Trump, mentioning that his administration’s actions affirmed her decision to support him during the 2024 election. She shared her surprise at witnessing swift political responsiveness, saying, “To see him come through for me and for women and girls so soon into his administration is truly a huge victory for us. I’ve never seen politics work in my favor immediately and effectively before.” Despite her excitement over the policy change, she did express disappointment regarding the time it took to reach this point.

Calls for Further Changes

While the new policy marks progress, Turner and her supporters demand additional measures from the U.S. Olympic and Paralympic Committee, or USOPC. The advocacy group Independent Council on Women’s Sports, or ICONS, which represents Turner, released a statement urging for mandated sex screening for female athletes. They argue that establishing screening protocols is vital to ensure fair competition for women in sports.

“The next critical step is for the USOPC to implement sex screening protocols to guarantee that women have equal, fair, and safe opportunities in athletic competition,” the statement read. The group emphasized their commitment to ensuring that every girl enjoys fair competition and privacy in locker rooms.

Turner similarly voiced her commitment to advocating for mandatory testing. She highlighted karyotyping as a significant method for determining biological sex, asserting that current documentation methods are insufficient. “You can’t rely on documentation anymore because those can all be altered,” she stated.

The Ripple Effects of a Viral Protest

Turner sparked considerable backlash against USA Fencing when she publicly protested her transgender opponent by choosing to kneel before their match in April, which led to her disqualification. This act of defiance drew attention to ongoing issues within the sport and the challenges faced by female athletes. In the wake of her protest, Turner testified at a federal hearing on May 7 regarding the controversy surrounding transgender athletes in women’s sports.

Turner’s testimony focused on the implications of the organization’s policies and the experiences of female athletes. The event galvanized public interest and prompted significant discussion regarding fairness in sports.

Policy Amendments at USA Fencing

In early June, the Board of Directors of USA Fencing voted to amend policies that previously favored tournaments in states with LGBTQ-friendly laws. This decision follows widespread criticism, particularly after the fallout from Turner’s protest. Those policies were viewed as inadequate in ensuring a level playing field for all competitors.

Following these discussions, USA Fencing quickly became one of the first organizations to announce alignment with USOPC’s updated participation guidelines. On July 18, 2025, new athlete safety regulations were introduced, which all governing bodies must comply with under the executive order.

Personal Reflections and Future Aspirations

Turner’s journey began in her home state of Maryland during the final weekend of March when she faced Redmond Sullivan, her transgender opponent, at the Cherry Blossom Open. Amidst the rising tension, she expressed her admiration for Sullivan but remained firm in her decision, stating, “I have much love and respect for you, but I will not fence you.”

Now that policy changes are underway, Turner is hopeful for future discussions and improvements in the division between men’s and women’s athletics. As she reflects on her actions, Turner stresses that her protest was about striving for fairness rather than targeting individuals. “I hope he understands that what he did was cheating, and it was not fair to women and girls. Personally, I don’t hate him, but I am frustrated with the system that allowed these policies to persist for so long,” she stated.

Moving Forward for Women in Sports

As the debate over transgender participation in women’s sports continues, Turner represents the voices advocating for a reconsideration of existing policies. The adjustments made by USA Fencing and support from athletes like Turner signal a growing awareness of fairness in competition and the necessity for more effective solutions. Turner reiterates her commitment to seeing through additional changes, establishing herself as an influential figure in this ongoing discussion.

With her recent experiences galvanizing a movement, Turner is determined to ensure that the rights and opportunities of female athletes are recognized and upheld, paving the way for future generations in sports.
