An Oregon woman suffered a fatal stabbing while her five young children were inside her home, according to police reports. The shocking incident took place on Saturday, sending ripples of grief through the community.
Neilyann Ysman, just 24 years old, was discovered with multiple stab wounds in her Portland residence. A suspect, identified as 28-year-old S Mate Joseph, was apprehended in Vancouver a few hours after the tragic event. He now faces serious murder charges.
Fortunately, Ysman’s five children, all under the age of six, were located and rescued unharmed. Authorities reacted swiftly to ensure the safety of the young ones under distressing circumstances. The police had to resort to explosives to breach a garage door, as they were uncertain of Joseph’s whereabouts within the house.
Neighbor Julia Mannthey witnessed the heartbreaking rescue and expressed her sorrow for the children. “They just looked numb to the situation, like they couldn’t process their emotions,” Mannthey revealed. “It’s just so sad, I feel so bad for them.”
The Medical Examiner confirmed that Ysman’s cause of death was due to a stab wound and has classified the manner of death as a homicide. Despite the severity of the incident, the police have not disclosed if Ysman’s children were in the same room during the stabbing.
This frightening incident occurred in the 6400 block of Southeast 143rd Court, approximately nine miles east of Downtown Portland. The Portland Police Bureau (PPB) arrived at the scene around 12:30 p.m., initiating a series of rapid investigations. They managed to track down Joseph, who was arrested by the Vancouver Police Department (VPD) shortly before 4 p.m.
Joseph, who resides in Battleground, has been booked into the Clark County Jail under an arrest warrant. He faces charges of second-degree murder related to domestic violence, along with first-degree burglary. Records from the jail indicate Joseph has a concerning pattern of legal troubles, which include multiple ongoing cases.
These pending issues involve charges for bail jumping due to previous misdemeanors, driving with a suspended license, and violations linked to domestic violence protection orders. Joseph’s criminal history further includes accusations of assault, DUI, and harassment stemming from domestic incidents.
The community is understandably shaken by the heinous crime. Several neighbors have expressed their shock and concern about safety in the area. Another resident, Shawn Lioyryan, expressed her fears regarding the police presence, a rarity in what she considered a safe neighborhood. “It’s scary, it’s very startling,” Lioyryan remarked. “To see so much police activity is definitely alarming.”
As investigations proceed, residents are left grappling with the reality of such violence occurring in their vicinity. Local authorities are working diligently to address community fears while ensuring justice for Ysman and her devastated children.
The tragic death of Neilyann Ysman not only highlights the violence that can occur within domestic spaces but raises pressing questions about the impacts on children exposed to such trauma. The futures of the five children now hang in the balance as social services step in to provide necessary support.
While their mother will no longer be there to guide them, the hope is that the community can come together to offer them some semblance of a normal childhood amidst the chaos.
As the case evolves and Joseph faces justice in court, the community remains vigilant, calling for not just accountability but also resource support for families affected by domestic violence. This heart-wrenching incident is a painful reminder of the urgent need for addressing issues surrounding domestic disputes and ensuring the safety of the most vulnerable.
