Progressive Representative Al Green from Texas is reigniting his push for the impeachment of President Donald Trump, asserting that he will introduce new articles of impeachment shortly. Green compares his efforts to the biblical battle between David and Goliath, claiming that anti-Trump advocates represent “one million Davids” ready to challenge the presidential figure.

Green stated, “This is what’s important, President Trump is a Goliath. He possesses a vast military apparatus and enjoys support within the judiciary and Congress. However, for every Goliath, there is a David. In this scenario, we have nearly one million Davids willing to confront the president over his unconstitutional actions. This number keeps growing.”

Previous Impeachment Efforts Fail to Gain Traction

In June, the House of Representatives voted overwhelmingly in a bipartisan manner to reject Green’s attempts to impeach Trump. Lawmakers supported tabling the measure with a decisive vote of 344 to 79. This procedural maneuver allows House members to dismiss a bill without formally voting on it.

A majority of House Democrats joined their Republican counterparts to block Green’s resolution, indicating the politically fraught nature of his efforts. Only 79 Democrats backed the motion to proceed with impeachment, while 128 opted to halt it.

Green Remains Undeterred

Despite the setbacks, Green expressed his determination during a press conference on Wednesday. He remarked, “We’re not going to treat this as a one-off event, and there are additional articles that I have not yet revealed that I plan to present soon. This is not the end of our efforts.”

When asked if pursuing impeachment is practical given the Republican majority in the House, Green retorted, “It is always a good time to impeach. I view focusing on impeachment as essential whenever there’s a breach of the Constitution. The timing is not contingent upon party majority in the House; impeachment is warranted whenever a president violates constitutional principles. It is a straightforward matter.”

Green’s Controversial Behavior Draws Criticism

In addition to his frequent attempts to impeach Trump, Green is also known for his disruptive behavior during the president’s joint address to Congress in March. He drew national attention by shouting and waving his cane, leading to his removal from the House floor. Green later described the disciplinary action as “invidious discrimination.”

The House subsequently voted to censure Green for his conduct during the event. Ten Democrats joined Republicans in this disciplinary vote, while Green himself chose to vote “present,” alongside first-term Representative Shomari Figures from Alabama.

Speaker Johnson Responds to Green’s Conduct

When contacted for comments, Speaker Mike Johnson’s office reiterated his remarks regarding Green’s censure. Johnson characterized Green’s behavior as shameful and egregious, claiming it brought disgrace to Congress and the constituents he represents. In a statement on social media, Johnson remarked, “Despite my repeated warnings, he failed to cease his antics, which necessitated my intervention to remove him from the chamber. His actions clearly violated House rules, and a swift censure vote was an appropriate response. Any Democrat aiming to rebuild trust with the American people should align with House Republicans in this matter.”
