Experts indicate that Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’s five-year agreement with Netflix may quietly run its course, potentially marking the end of an era for the royal couple’s presence on the popular streaming platform.
British broadcaster and photographer Helena Chard shared her insights, stating that the couple’s venture with Netflix is unlikely to generate much fanfare upon its expiration. She noted, “There are whispers that Harry and Meghan’s Netflix deal will expire quietly. I can’t imagine that either party would want to shout this news over the rooftops. They will hope it’s a smooth transition.” This sentiment underscores concerns about the couple’s waning appeal.
Chard emphasized that the Sussexes’ star attraction has significantly dwindled compared to past years.
When Harry and Meghan signed their Netflix deal in 2020, it marked a crucial shift in their lives after they stepped down as senior royals and departed the U.K. Their debut docuseries, “Harry & Meghan,” made waves, becoming the streaming platform’s most-watched debut. However, subsequent offerings have not resonated with the audience as strongly.
Despite initial success, other projects like “With Love, Meghan” and “Heart of Invictus” have struggled to draw in viewers. Chard commented on this downturn, stating, “The majority of their material has received poor viewing figures. There doesn’t seem to be suitable appeal for any new productions starring the duo.” She pointed out that public sentiment has largely turned against them, reflecting a significant shift in audience perception.
Ian Pelham Turner, a royal expert, described the potential loss of the Netflix deal as a significant setback for the couple. He noted that financial pressures could drive them to reconsider their living situation, with a return to the U.K. becoming a viable option as speculation suggests.
Turner elaborated on their lifestyle, asserting, “They obviously have a lavish lifestyle, and it was always thought that Netflix saw the duo as the jewel in the crown for their platform.” Despite this, the recent developments paint a stark picture of their current standing.
Interestingly, some analysts suggest that Meghan has become adept at maintaining financial stability. Turner remarked, “Meghan has become the Harry Houdini in sorting out financial safety,” indicating that while their Netflix future remains uncertain, they may find opportunities elsewhere.
In light of the impending expiration of their Netflix deal, Markle’s upcoming season of “With Love, Meghan” may provide a glimmer of hope. Set to premiere around the same time as the contract’s expiration, this series could lead to a potential first-look agreement with Netflix for upcoming projects.
However, experts remain skeptical about the show’s viability. Hilary Fordwich, another royal commentator, echoed this caution. She noted that Netflix would likely prefer the contract to end discreetly, highlighting disappointing ratings for projects produced by the couple. Fordwich said, “Cancellation is a proper response to ghastly ratings since the only project they produced with financial benefit to Netflix was their initial mudslinging at the royal family docuseries ‘Harry & Meghan.'”
Fordwich further elaborated on the audience’s lack of interest in subsequent projects, suggesting that viewers were more captivated by scandal than any genuine interest in the couple’s lives. She remarked, “Public fascination was merely driven by the controversy and inside royal details being spewed, but neither H nor M themselves have proven to be of interest.”
This perception extends across the Atlantic Ocean, where both American and British audiences appear to share similar sentiments regarding the couple’s declining fame.
Despite the challenges faced in the streaming realm, Markle has recently seen success with her lifestyle brand, As Ever. The brand has experienced sell-outs of limited products, including candles and preserves, which showcases Markle’s ability to engage a specific market demographic.
Royal expert Richard Fitzwilliams acknowledged this development, asserting that Netflix’s collaboration with the As Ever brand may influence the platform’s decision about renewing their deal. He remarked, “Their CEO Ted Sarandos did praise Meghan relatively recently, but he hadn’t seen the terrible ratings which showed ‘With Love, Meghan,’ her much-touted cookery series, had been almost totally ignored by viewers.”
Fitzwilliams also reflected on Harry’s documentary about polo, suggesting that its elitism limited its appeal. He stated, “Harry’s ‘Polo’ documentary wouldn’t do well because it’s an elitist sport, and although ‘Heart of Invictus’ was ‘worthy,’ it was never likely to draw in the crowds.”
He concluded that their most impactful work remains the intensely scrutinized docuseries, which highlighted royal family tensions. He added, “What did was ‘Harry & Meghan,’ the six-part docuseries which trashed the royal family. That, it seems, is all they have to offer.
