President Donald Trump made a notable stop at the Turnberry golf course in Scotland during his overseas visit on Saturday. This excursion is part of a five-day trip that began on Friday, during which Trump is expected to visit his golf resort in Aberdeen and engage with British Prime Minister Keir Starmer and Scotland’s First Minister John Swinney.
During his time at Turnberry, Trump played a round of golf with his son Eric and U.S. Ambassador to Britain Warren Stephens. The president shared a video montage highlighting his golf skills, along with a quote about the iconic course attributed to golf legend Gary Player.
Trump quoted Player’s admiration, stating, “The Great Gary Player: ‘Turnberry is, without a question, in the Top Five Greatest Golf Courses I’ve ever played in my 73 years as a Pro.’ Thank you, Gary!” This statement reflects the high regard that many golfers have for the prestigious course.
Turnberry has a rich history, having hosted four Open Championships in 1977, 1986, 1994, and 2009. However, in the wake of the Capitol Riots in 2021, the Royal and Ancient Golf Club decided against returning the Open Championship to Turnberry until there is assurance that coverage would focus solely on golf and the championship.
Protests emerged as hundreds gathered on the cobblestone streets outside the U.S. Consulate in Edinburgh, located about 100 miles from Turnberry. Demonstrators voiced their discontent, declaring Trump unwelcome and expressing criticism towards Starmer for negotiating a trade deal aimed at avoiding heavy U.S. tariffs on goods imported from the United Kingdom.
In a notable defense of Turnberry, Gary Player, a two-time Senior Open Championship winner at the venue, called on the R&A to reconsider their stance regarding the course’s future. Player argued for fairness, stating, “It must come back. Fairness in life. Some might say Donald Trump did … what about every other President? They all did something wrong. Not only Donald Trump. Every one of them. It says in the Bible: Forgive us of our trespasses as we forgive them that trespass against us.”
This appeal reflects Player’s belief that it is unjust and harsh to deny The Open Championship the opportunity to return to Turnberry, highlighting that it remains one of Scotland’s premier golf courses alongside Carnoustie.
Recent reports indicate that the PGA Tour plans to return to Trump Doral next year, marking the event’s first appearance since 2016, before Trump assumed the presidency for his first term. Trump acquired the Turnberry resort in 2014 for a reported $60 million, and since then, it has remained a point of interest in discussions about golf’s intersection with politics.
The last professional tournament held at Turnberry was the 2015 Women’s British Open, which was won by Inbee Park. Additionally, the course has hosted seven Senior Open Championships, with the most recent occurring in 2012.
Throughout the history of the Open Championships held at Turnberry, golfers such as Tom Watson, Greg Norman, Nick Price, and Stewart Cink claimed victories, cementing the venue’s legacy in the world of golf.
