Fox News Poll Reveals Complex Views on Deportation Amid Immigration Debate

As the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement agency, known as ICE, intensifies its efforts against illegal immigration, a recent Fox News poll indicates that nearly half of voters perceive the department as excessively aggressive in its deportation strategies. The survey underscores a nuanced public sentiment regarding deportation, highlighting how support varies significantly based on the demographic being targeted.

The latest findings from the Fox News survey, released on Monday, reveal that only 30% of respondents support the deportation of all illegal immigrants. In stark contrast, about 60% advocate for the deportation of individuals charged with crimes while allowing others the opportunity to remain and pursue citizenship. Furthermore, 10% of those surveyed expressed preference for permitting all illegal immigrants to stay in the United States.

The trend regarding deportation has shown a general majority favoring such actions since 2015, but the specifics of support have changed over time.

Political Party Perspectives on Deportation

The survey results also expose significant partisan divides. A striking 54% of Republicans advocate for deporting all illegal immigrants, compared to just 7% of Democrats. Among independents, the support stands at 25%. This disparity illustrates the politicization of immigration issues, with most Democrats (approximately 80%) and around 60% of independents supporting the deportation of only those charged with crimes while allowing others a chance to stay.

Public Sentiment on ICE’s Approach

Public opinions regarding ICE’s current approach to deportation demonstrate notable divisions. Nearly 49% of participants feel that the agency’s efforts are overly aggressive, while 24% believe they are insufficient. An additional 27% assert that ICE’s actions are reasonable.

Democratic respondents overwhelmingly regard ICE as too aggressive, with 81% sharing this view. In contrast, Republican opinions are more mixed, with 43% deeming the agency’s efforts as appropriate while 40% feel the need for more aggression. A smaller percentage, 17%, agrees with the assessment that ICE is overly forceful.

Interestingly, independents are more likely than others to express concerns about ICE’s aggressiveness, with 49% categorizing it as excessive.

Concerns Surrounding Illegal Immigration

When asked about their primary concerns regarding illegal immigration, a significant 39% of voters cited the strain on government resources. Lesser concerns included potential increases in crime (16%), job loss for citizens (14%), threats of terrorism (10%), and cultural shifts (9%).

These concerns highlight a shift in public perception over the last 15 years. In 2010, 63% of voters worried about economic issues like job loss and government strain, which contrasts with only 53% today. Interestingly, fears about crime have risen, with 16% of voters expressing concerns today compared to just 6% in 2010.

Public Opinion on Immigration Policy Spending

Majority sentiment also leans against specific immigration-related funding measures proposed in recent budget legislation, branded as the ‘One Big Beautiful Bill.’ The poll indicates that 55% of voters oppose increased financial resources for the border wall, while 59% disapprove of additional spending on immigrant detention facilities.

Republicans vs. Democrats on Immigration Management

By a slight margin, voters believe the Republican Party is more adept at handling immigration issues compared to the Democratic Party. President Donald Trump’s approval ratings concerning border security remain notably high, with 56% of respondents expressing approval and 44% disapproval. For immigration overall, his ratings are similarly close at 48% approval and 51% disapproval. Conversely, he garners considerably lower ratings on foreign policy (45% approval) and economic performance (44% approval), while other issues like inflation and tariffs also reflect disapproval at rates of 36% and 62% respectively.

The Bipartisan View on Border Security

One reason behind Trump’s relatively favorable ratings on border security could be the support he receives from Democrats. Approximately one in five Democrats approves of his border security policies, marking this as their highest approval rating for any issue surveyed. Notably, over half of independents also convey approval, making this his most successful agenda item.

Insights from Hispanic Voters

Among Hispanic voters, attitudes on illegal immigration echo national sentiments. Approximately 60% support deportation for individuals charged with crimes, while only 15% endorse the deportation of all illegal residents. Interestingly, 23% advocate for allowing all illegal residents to remain.

Consistent with broader trends, the majority of Hispanic voters, 57%, feel that ICE has been too aggressive in its enforcement actions. Meanwhile, 54% express approval of Trump’s performance on border security but disapprove of his immigration policies overall (60%). Overall, 42% of Hispanic voters approve of his job performance while 58% disapprove.

The top concern regarding illegal immigration among Hispanic voters also pertains to the strain on government resources, with 35% identifying this as their primary worry. Other concerns, such as crime (15%), job competition (14%), and cultural impacts (14%), reflect broader public apprehensions.

A Comprehensive Voter Perspective

The Fox News survey, conducted between July 18 and July 21, 2025, involved interviewing a sample of 1,000 registered voters selected randomly from a national voter file. Respondents engaged in live interviews via landlines and cellphones, or participated in online surveys after receiving a text. The margin of sampling error for the full sample stands at ±3 percentage points, with higher margins for subgroups.
