7-hydroxymitragynine, commonly referred to as 7-OH, is a concentrated derivative of kratom, a plant-based substance often utilized for its pain-relieving properties and as a stimulant.
This concentrated byproduct has been linked to the opioid receptors in the human body, raising alarms about its potential for abuse and numerous drug-related symptoms.
Health Officials Raise Alarm Over Availability of Dangerous Substance Nationwide
This substance, categorized as a synthetic opioid, is found in beverages, powders, and tablets sold at vape shops, gas stations, and a variety of retailers throughout the country.
The occurrence of medical emergencies related to 7-OH has prompted the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) and the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to take action against the vendors offering these products.
In a recent press release, the HHS stated that the FDA is advocating for the regulation of these items under the Controlled Substances Act (CSA).
FDA Commissioner Marty Makary emphasized the urgency of addressing this issue as vape stores rapidly proliferate across America. Many of these outlets sell addictive products like concentrated 7-OH.
Concerns Echo Amid Calls for Regulation and Better Testing of Kratom
As he articulated, following the previous opioid epidemic, it is crucial not to become complacent once again. He characterized 7-OH as an opioid potentially more potent than morphine, underscoring the pressing need for regulation and public education to avert another wave of the opioid crisis.
The FDA has confirmed that there are currently no FDA-approved medications containing 7-OH. Furthermore, it is illegal to include this substance in dietary supplements or traditional food products.
Kratom is derived from the leaves of the Mitragyna speciosa tree, native to Southeast Asian regions like Malaysia and Thailand, as noted by Lori Karan, M.D., a professor specializing in internal and preventive medicine at Loma Linda University in California.
The leaves of this tree host over 40 active compounds, with mitragynine, 7-hydroxymitragynine, and speciofoline being the most predominant.
Experts indicate that kratom functions with dual properties. At lower doses, it produces stimulatory effects, while at higher doses, it can deliver opioid-like analgesic effects, according to Dr. Richard Clark, medical director of the California Poison Control System in San Diego.
He explained that kratom interacts with opioid receptors in the brain similarly to opioid analgesics. Therefore, it has been employed either as a substitute for these drugs or a means to alleviate symptoms of opioid withdrawal.
Many Americans utilize kratom to self-manage chronic pain or combat opioid withdrawal symptoms, Dr. Clark added.
When isolated in its concentrated form, 7-OH emerges as a powerfully potent analgesic.
According to the HHS, 7-OH can exceed morphine in potency, leading to risks of abuse and withdrawal symptoms from dependency.
Despite vendors claiming kratom is safe and all-natural, the actual composition may vary significantly, often misrepresenting what is indicated on the product labels.
Although serious toxic effects from kratom are rare, they can occur when individuals consume large doses or combine it with other substances. Issues such as hallucinations, seizures, coma, or even death can result, as cautioned by Dr. Clark.
Dependency and withdrawal can also develop with extensive kratom use, he continued.
Additional side effects may encompass nausea, dizziness, confusion, and tremors, as explained by Dr. Karan.
In a press conference held on Tuesday, the FDA and HHS officials proclaimed a decisive action plan addressing the burgeoning availability of 7-OH products. Robert F. Kennedy Jr. spoke about the challenges of addiction faced by millions of Americans.
He stated that vape shops are increasingly positioned near schools and in economically disadvantaged neighborhoods, making these products readily accessible.
Notably, he remarked that these items are marketed in attractive formats for children, including gummy bears and brightly colored wrappers, asserting that this poses a troubling trend within the industry.
During the same event, Commissioner Makary clarified that the agencies do not plan to classify pure kratom as safe for consumption at this juncture.
