In Hamilton County, Ohio, the top prosecutor, Connie Pillich, has expressed concern over a viral video that shows a violent street attack in downtown Cincinnati. Despite statements from Chief of Police Teresa Theetge indicating that charges have been filed against five individuals involved, Pillich confirmed that her office has yet to receive official notification regarding these charges.
During an interview with Fox News Digital, Pillich noted her understanding that five people are indeed facing charges, but she remains uncertain about the specific allegations. This situation arises from a brutal incident that occurred on Friday night between Elm and Fourth Streets, which quickly garnered widespread video coverage on social media platforms.
The footage circulating online depicts two individuals violently attacking a man dressed in a white T-shirt, who ultimately gets pushed to the ground. While on the pavement, the man is subjected to several kicks before managing to stand up.
A disturbing detail from the video includes scenes of a woman lying unconscious in the street after being punched. Bystanders can be seen assisting her, and she eventually regains consciousness.
In her comments, Pillich expressed her distress over the incident, stating, “What I saw in that video was very, very troubling to me. Just people fighting, using violence to solve some, probably, some minor disagreement. And that’s just not acceptable behavior.” She highlighted the alarming nature of this event occurring in an area of Cincinnati known for its low crime rate.
Reflecting on the circumstances surrounding the violent confrontation, Pillich explained that numerous events were occurring in the city that night, including a music festival, a basketball tournament at the Heritage Bank Center, and a Cincinnati Reds baseball game. She remarked, “It was just a perfect storm of people being out late, probably drinking, having some sort of disagreement that exploded into a fistfight. That can happen with alcohol, and as you can see…some of them were dressed up very nicely, and they were just out on the town.”
The prosecutor acknowledged that such incidents are rare. Nevertheless, she stressed the need for caution and better conflict resolution in public settings.
Pillich further emphasized the impact of social media in exacerbating tensions during public gatherings. She stated, “So, we’re just seeing that kind of temperature being stoked a little bit, probably through, in my mind, through social media, through gossip transmitted across social media. So, we need to step that down a little bit.”
During a press conference on Monday, Police Chief Theetge condemned social media for allegedly failing to portray the full narrative leading up to the assault, which some observers have labeled as racially motivated. She also voiced her frustration with media portrayals of the incident.
Theetge revealed that over 100 witnesses recorded the assault but lamented that only one individual contacted 911 to report the violence. By the time police arrived, the attack had ceased. She remarked, “The idea that nobody called 911…I think is part of the culture that we’re in right now where we want to record everything, and I don’t know what people do with those recordings. But calling 911 has got to be what we do first. 911’s been around for decades, way earlier than this century was arriving here. People should know 911, and perhaps this is a very good reminder to everyone that we should all call 911 if we see something.”
Despite Theetge’s statement regarding the number of bystanders recording the attack, Pillich noted that there were also people attempting to de-escalate the situation. “I can tell you when I looked at a couple of the videos, I saw people yelling, ‘Stop! Stop!’ I saw [people] pulling people out of the melee. I saw a small amount of people trying to help, and I‘m really glad about those good people who understand that we’re better than this,” she shared.
