Steve Ricchetti, a prominent Democratic strategist, will appear before House investigators on Wednesday. This marks his emergence as the seventh former White House aide to be called for questioning in the ongoing investigation led by Oversight Committee Chairman James Comer.
Ricchetti held the position of counselor to President Joe Biden throughout most of his first term in the White House. His testimony is expected to involve a closed-door transcribed interview, likely spanning several hours.
Chairman Comer, a Republican from Kentucky, is delving into serious allegations that senior White House aides may have concealed indications of President Biden’s mental decline. Central to this inquiry is whether executive actions were signed using an autopen without the president’s explicit knowledge.
Ricchetti’s long-standing connection with Biden began in 2012 when he took on the role of counselor to the vice president during the Obama administration. He later rose to become Biden’s chief of staff in late 2013, demonstrating deep trust and influence within Biden’s inner circle.
Over the years, Ricchetti has cultivated a reputation as both a lobbyist and a key player in Democratic politics. His leadership extended to chairing Biden’s successful presidential campaign in 2020, a role that underscores his significant political acumen.
The Oversight Committee is notably interested in Ricchetti’s alleged involvement in managing White House operations. This inquiry includes an examination of whether aides systematically worked to downplay observable signs of the president’s cognitive struggles.
In a letter addressed to Ricchetti in June, Comer highlighted his pivotal advisory role, stating, “As Counselor to former President Biden, you served as one of his closest advisors. Reports suggest you were part of a group that devised strategies to minimize the perception of the president’s age-related struggles.”
This letter referenced a report by the Wall Street Journal, igniting further scrutiny regarding the implications of such strategies. Comer warned that if White House personnel orchestrated an extensive effort over an extended period to mask the president’s condition, it could provoke a necessary legislative response from Congress.
Axios reporter Alex Thompson, who co-authored a book on Biden’s cognitive decline, indicated earlier this year that Ricchetti belonged to a tight-knit group often referred to as Biden’s
