The NFL has issued a poignant statement following a mass shooting at its New York City headquarters on Monday night.
In a message shared on social media, the NFL expressed its gratitude for the immense global support that has emerged in the wake of this tragic act of violence. The league’s headquarters, located at 345 Park Ave., serves multiple organizations.
Among the key points in the NFL’s statement were heartfelt tributes to the four innocent lives lost, including NYPD Officer Didarul Islam. The league emphasized that the heroism of Islam will not be forgotten. They also extended thoughts and support to the survivors who now face the arduous journey of physical and emotional recovery.
In reinforcing the strength of its community, the NFL declared that the “NFL family is resilient and united, and together, we will find strength in one another as we heal.”
Fox News Digital received multiple memos sent to NFL employees from Commissioner Roger Goodell, who has been actively updating staff since the incident occurred. The first memo detailed how an NFL employee sustained serious injuries during the shooting. The alleged gunman, identified as 27-year-old Shane Tamura, reportedly took his own life on the 33rd floor after attacking those in the lobby. The injured employee is currently in stable condition at a local hospital.
On Tuesday, another memo was conveyed to all NFL employees located in New York City, informing them that they would need to work remotely at least until the end of the following week. The memo clarified that the office would remain closed and requested that employees refrain from attempting to enter the building until it has been deemed safe.
Goodell further expressed in his message, “Our hearts go out to all of the victims and their families, and we are deeply grateful for the first responders and medical staff who acted swiftly and continue to provide care.”
New York City Mayor Eric Adams spoke on Fox 5 NY’s “Good Day New York” on Tuesday, providing further insights into the event. He revealed that the gunman intended to target the NFL headquarters but inadvertently accessed the wrong elevator bank, which was designated for Rudin Management.
Adams disclosed that Tamura might have experienced issues related to chronic traumatic encephalopathy, commonly known as CTE. Reports indicate that Tamura had grievances with the NFL.
The mayor stated that the suspect appeared to blame the NFL for his situation and mistakenly entered a different elevator bank that did not lead directly to the intended target.
Investigators are currently examining a suicide note allegedly written by Tamura. Officials have confirmed that a three-page note was found in his wallet, indicating references to CTE and voicing anger towards the NFL over the progressive brain disease that many retired players face.
Goodell’s latest memo urged employees to prioritize their well-being during this challenging period, stating, “Please continue to take care of yourselves and one another. If you need additional support, do not hesitate to reach out to your manager or HR. We are here for you.”
The devastating shooting claimed the lives of three additional victims: Wesley LePatner, an executive at Blackstone; Aland Etienne, a security guard; and Julia Hyman, an associate at Rudin Management.
