EXCLUSIVE: Amir Hassan, a Republican candidate aiming for Michigan’s 8th Congressional District seat, has unveiled an ambitious tax reform proposal aimed at providing substantial tax relief for first responders. This plan would specifically target nurses, teachers, firefighters, and police officers earning less than $100,000 annually.
In an exclusive interview with Fox News Digital, Hassan articulated his rationale for the proposal, stating, “We must reward the job force that protects us. “My objective is to advance legislation that builds on what President Trump initiated,” Hassan said. He emphasized the need to eliminate taxes on tips, adding that this is just the beginning. As a former federal law enforcement officer and U.S. Navy veteran, Hassan expressed a desire to incentivize the workforce. The Flint native is gearing up to challenge incumbent Democratic Governor Kristen McDonald-Rivet in the upcoming election to represent Michigan in the U.S. House of Representatives.
McDonald-Rivet secured her position in Michigan’s 8th District in 2024, but the seat has remained under Democratic control for decades. Her predecessor, former Rep. Dan Kildee, retired last year after serving more than a decade.
Despite the long-standing Democratic dominance, the district experienced a significant shift during the 2024 presidential election when Trump managed to flip it for Republicans. This change underscores a complex political landscape where voters may support Republicans at the top of the ticket while choosing Democratic candidates to represent them in Congress.
Michigan’s 8th District is among 13 congressional districts where voters demonstrated this ballot-splitting trend in the last election. As the upcoming midterm elections approach, House Republicans are keenly focused on these districts, recognizing their potential to sway the outcome.
Hassan criticized the continued representation by the Democratic Party, remarking, “This county has been under Democratic leadership since the 1970s, resulting in persistent issues for our community.” He contends that McDonald-Rivet represents nothing new and aligns with party agendas that he claims have led to negative outcomes for the area.
“She consistently aligns with her party’s stance, driving us toward further challenges,” Hassan asserted. He sees himself as a “son of this district,” with a personal connection to its history as multiple family members have worked for General Motors.
According to Hassan, the local community suffered as jobs left the area due to overseas outsourcing, contributing to a decline in population. He praises President Trump’s efforts to bolster the fair trade market, suggesting that policies designed to bring jobs back to America are beginning to make a difference.
“Under President Trump’s leadership, we are witnessing a resurgence of blue-collar jobs, benefiting the people of Michigan,” Hassan remarked, pointing to the importance of revitalizing the state’s manufacturing base.
In the previous year, Trump campaigned vigorously to re-establish Michigan as a hub for the automobile industry. Hassan intends to take this commitment to Congress, reinforcing the agenda of revitalizing American manufacturing and demonstrating faith in domestic production.
“The automotive sector has been foundational to our nation and this district. However, we must also encourage the growth of other industries,” Hassan stated. He sees a pressing need for development and construction in the area, emphasizing the importance of incentivizing businesses to establish themselves in the U.S.
When reached for a comment on Hassan’s allegations, McDonald-Rivet’s campaign redirected Fox News Digital to former Michigan state senator Jim Ananich. Ananich noted, “Residents of mid-Michigan are aware that Kristen McDonald-Rivet delivered the largest tax cut for working families in the state’s history.”
He further highlighted her proven track record of collaborating with both parties to enhance the lives of working families. This includes efforts to reduce costs, fortify the border, and oppose certain mandates, underscoring the complexity of the ongoing political discourse.
