Prince William and Prince Harry Will Not Inherit Princess Diana’s Childhood Home, Expert Confirms

Prince William and Prince Harry will not be inheriting their late mother Princess Diana’s childhood home at Althorp. This ancestral estate holds significant historical and emotional value, serving as the final resting place of Diana. Currently, the property is in the hands of her brother, Earl Charles Spencer, who resides there.

Royal commentator Richard Fitzwilliams shared insights with Fox News Digital, emphasizing that the estate was always intended to pass to the next Earl Spencer. That individual is Louis Spencer, Viscount Althorp, who is the cousin of William and Harry.

The Spencer family adheres to the principle of primogeniture, which designates that titles and estates go to the eldest male heir. Louis Spencer has three older sisters: Lady Kitty, Lady Eliza, and Lady Amelia.

Fitzwilliams elaborated, stating, “It would pass to the male heir even though Kitty Spencer is the current earl’s eldest child. There is no possibility of William and Harry obtaining the property. Why would anyone think this should be the case?”

Fox News Digital also reached out to the Althorp estate for a formal statement regarding this matter. Fitzwilliams’ remarks follow a report from Vanity Fair, which indicated that the estate would indeed be inherited by Louis Spencer, aged 31. Louis is the son of Charles, the Ninth Earl Spencer, and British model Victoria Aitken.

Royal expert Ian Pelham Turner discussed the historical context of the inheritance laws. He expressed concern regarding their relevance in the modern era, stating, “Do I agree with this method still being used in the 21st century? Any rules that affect women through historical degradation are abhorrent to me. However, the wealthy classes still adhere to outdated practices.”

Turner clarified the legal implications for William and Harry, noting, “In terms of Harry and William becoming the heirs to the Althorp estate, they possess no legal rights. Nevertheless, they will always hold a connection to the maintenance of the estate and their mother’s resting place.”

Louis Spencer, who was raised in South Africa, maintains a low profile and is an actor. Reports suggest that he has proactively participated in management discussions at the estate to support his father’s work.

Charles Spencer previously remarked to the Mail on Sunday that he would feel “totally relaxed” regarding Kitty inheriting Althorp. However, he acknowledged, “If I chose Kitty, it would contradict all the tradition associated with Althorp.”

He continues, “That is simply the nature of the situation. I understand the problems with it as a concept, but I also appreciate the strengths it embodies, considering the work invested thus far.”

In a 2015 feature for Tatler magazine, Kitty Spencer defended the precedent of her brother inheriting the estate, saying, “In general, I’m totally pro-gender equality. However, I find comfort in the idea that this responsibility will fall to my brother. I believe it is the correct path forward.”

She added, “I prefer that the house remains within the same family under one surname. This continuity is essential for the Spencers. I have full confidence my brother will manage it impeccably.”

Furthermore, the Spencer family has resided at Althorp since 1508. Diana’s father inherited the title of Earl Spencer in 1975, when the family moved to the estate, which has become intertwined with their history.

Princess Diana passed away in 1997 at the age of 36, leaving a profound legacy. Her burial site is located on a small island at the center of Althorp’s Oval Lake, which the public cannot access. This setting enables William and Harry to visit their mother’s grave in a private and tranquil environment.

Charles, now 61, previously told People magazine, “It is very meaningful for William and Harry to have access to their mother’s resting place. Luckily, it is peaceful here, and they can visit whenever they wish. This knowledge brings me great comfort.”

While the public can pay tribute at a memorial established in Diana’s honor, her personal burial site remains sacred and secluded.

On the 25th anniversary of her death, Harry shared poignant reflections in his memoir, describing a visit to his mother’s resting place alongside his wife, Meghan Markle. He conveyed deep emotion, stating, “At long last, I brought the girl of my dreams home to introduce her to mum.”

After Diana’s passing, her two sons inherited various personal possessions and financial assets. Harry once disclosed in an interview with Oprah Winfrey that the funds he received from his mother facilitated his move to California in 2020. He explained, “Without that support, we would not have been able to transition. I believe my mother foresaw this moment, and I felt her presence throughout the entire process.”

Overall, the narrative surrounding Princess Diana’s estate and the implications for her sons underscores the intricate ties between tradition and modernity within the British aristocracy. As the Spencer family moves forward, the legacy of Diana continues to resonate in the lives of her children and beyond.
