A man accused of setting a Virginia city councilman on fire allegedly had the intention to kill him, according to police charging documents. This shocking incident took place Wednesday within the premises of Showcase Magazine, where the councilman, Lee Vogler, serves as the sales director.
Shotsie Michael Buck Hayes, 29, of Danville, reportedly forced his way into the building, dousing Vogler with gasoline from a five-gallon bucket before igniting him. The Danville Police Department confirmed the details surrounding this alarming event.
During the horrifying attack, Vogler managed to identify his assailant, which helped police apprehend Hayes just a few blocks away shortly after he fled the scene.
In a disturbing revelation, Hayes allegedly confessed to the police that his intentions were fatal. Court records indicate that he wanted Vogler to die in the flames, as initially reported by the Associated Press.
Personal Grievance, Not Political Motive
Authorities emphasized that Hayes and Vogler knew each other, asserting that the incident stemmed from a “personal matter.” Officials clarified that this attack was not related to Vogler’s role in the Danville City Council or any political affiliations.
As a result of the attack, Hayes faces serious charges, including attempted first-degree murder and aggravated malicious wounding. He is currently held in the Danville City Jail without bond.
Vogler’s Condition Remains Unclear
After the attack, Vogler had to be airlifted to a regional medical facility for urgent treatment. At present, there is uncertainty regarding his health condition.
Vogler, who has served on the Danville City Council since May 2012, made history as the youngest individual elected to the council at the age of 24.
In response to the attack, Vogler’s wife, Blair, shared a heartfelt message on social media, expressing her admiration for her husband’s resilience.
Support from Family and Community
Blair Vogler wrote, “As anyone who knows him would expect, he is facing this challenge the same way he’s faced every obstacle in his life—with courage, determination, and an unbreakable spirit. Lee is a fighter.”
She further reflected on his character, stating, “Beyond the headlines and the public moments, there is a man who deeply loves his family, city, and its people.”
This attack raises significant concerns about safety and violence towards public officials. Vogler’s situation has ignited a conversation about the experiences of local leaders who face threats or violence in their line of duty.
Call for Reflection on Community Safety
As the investigation into this incident continues, it serves as a stark reminder of the need for vigilance in protecting public figures. The motives behind such violent acts are complex, yet it is crucial for communities to foster an environment where dialogue and conflict resolution can take precedence over aggression.
Vogler’s determination to recover may inspire others facing adversity, highlighting the importance of support from loved ones and the community. In times like these, the strength of individuals and families shines through challenges, proving that hope can remain even in the direst situations.
Representatives for Vogler’s office, as well as Hayes’ attorney, Edward Lavado, did not respond promptly to inquiries for comments.
