New video evidence has emerged from Cincinnati, Ohio, capturing a violent confrontation that occurred last weekend. The footage reveals an individual shouting a racial slur as the brutal encounter escalated, yet it remains unclear who uttered the slur and the target of the statement.
Attorney Brandon Fox, representing defendant Jermaine Matthews, emphasized to Fox News’ CB Cotton that the situation was not a coordinated racial attack. He expressed that separate fights had broken out, ignited by racial slurs, which significantly intensified the conflict.
Fox further stated that Matthews was not part of the initial skirmishes and was attempting to intervene. His involvement reportedly began when a taller White man slapped him, prompting Matthews to engage. As the lead-up to the violence unraveled, the atmosphere became increasingly hostile.
Matthews currently faces serious charges including aggravated riot and assault, with a bond initially set at $100,000. After a court appearance on Thursday, he was hit with additional counts of felonious assault and misdemeanor assault, resulting in a new bond totaling $270,000.
Cincinnati’s Leadership Responds to Community Outrage
In the wake of the disturbing incident, Cincinnati Mayor Aftab Pureval publicly condemned the violence. He vowed to hold responsible parties accountable, asserting his commitment to combating violent crime in the city. His comments follow a short-term reprieve from his vacation in Canada, where he was alerted to the growing public outcry.
Addressing media on Friday, Pureval stated that the city will not tolerate acts of violence, regardless of their nature. He underscored that city officials are prepared to investigate thoroughly and take necessary actions against those involved.
Victoria Parks, a city councilwoman, is under scrutiny herself for her comments on social media, suggesting that the victims of the assault had provoked the situation. This remark led to backlash from community members and raised questions about her sensitivity to the incident.
The Cincinnati Police Chief, Teresa Theetge, also weighed in stating that out of approximately 100 witnesses to the brutal confrontation, only one individual contacted law enforcement. This lack of immediate reporting has sparked discussions on community engagement and trust in local authorities.
Theetge assured the public that had the police been alerted in real time, they would have responded with urgency, aiming to preserve life and ensure safety during the violent escalation.
Arrests and Ongoing Investigations
To date, four individuals have been arrested in connection with the altercation. Alongside Matthews, co-defendants include Merriweather, Dekyra Vernon, and Dominique Kittle. Merriweather faces multiple counts including felonious assault and aggravated rioting, with a substantial bond set at $500,000.
Vernon’s bond was established at $200,000, as she contends with similar felonious and misdemeanor assault charges, in addition to aggravated rioting. While Matthews’ attorney insists his client did not know Merriweather, detectives revealed in court earlier this week that the two appeared to have coordinated their actions prior to the outbreak of violence.
Kittle, charged with aggravated rioting and misdemeanor assault, had his first court appearance on Saturday, with a bond set at $150,000. His defense attorney mentioned that Kittle is diagnosed with paranoid schizophrenia, adding another layer of complexity to his case.
Throughout this ordeal, tensions remain palpable within the community, prompting wider discussions about race relations, violence, and accountability in urban environments.
