Australian state Victoria is rolling out an initiative to encourage citizens to surrender machetes as part of a forthcoming statewide ban aimed at reducing knife crime. This proactive approach allows residents to relinquish these weapons at designated disposal bins without facing any penalties prior to the ban’s effective date of September 1.
In a recent announcement, officials revealed that over 40 machete disposal bins will be strategically placed at police stations throughout the state. This program is part of a broader strategy focused on public safety and crime prevention.
The Victorian government issued a stern warning. Individuals found owning, carrying, using, buying, or selling a machete without proper exemption or approval will face criminal charges. According to an official statement, the consequences for non-compliance could lead to serious repercussions, including imprisonment for up to two years or hefty fines exceeding 47,000 AUD, which is about 31,725 in US dollars.
