Tragedy at Miami Sailing Camp Claims Third Young Life After Barge Collision

A third child has tragically died nearly a week after suffering critical injuries in a collision with a barge that struck a sailboat involved in a sailing camp in Miami, according to a statement from the U.S. Coast Guard on Sunday.

The Coast Guard confirmed the death of a 10-year-old girl but withheld her identity initially. Later, Gabriel Groisman, the former mayor of Bal Harbour, Florida, revealed that the young victim was his cousin, Arielle Buchman, in a post on social media platform X.

In a heartfelt statement, Capt. Frank Florio, commanding officer of Coast Guard Sector Miami, shared the community’s grief: “Our hearts continue to mourn with all those impacted by Monday’s tragic incident, especially with the passing of another one of Miami’s children today.” Groisman mourned the loss further, noting that Arielle’s death occurred on Tisha B’Av, a significant day of mourning in the Jewish faith.

Details of the Incident

The distressing incident took place on July 28 at approximately 11:30 a.m. in Biscayne Bay, when a barge collided with the sailboat. All six individuals on board were rescued from the water following the crash.

Four children were transported to a hospital for emergency care. Sadly, a 7-year-old girl named Mila Yankelevich and a 13-year-old girl, Erin Ko Han, were pronounced dead shortly after arrival. Mila was identified as the granddaughter of renowned Argentinian TV producer Cris Morena. The Consulate of Argentina in Miami confirmed her identity to media outlets.

An 8-year-old girl remains in critical condition as of the last update. In addition, a 19-year-old woman and a 12-year-old girl were rescued but did not require hospitalization.

As the investigation into the cause of the collision continues, officials have not yet released definitive details. However, they have confirmed that salvage operations commenced shortly after the crash.

Capt. Florio emphasized the Coast Guard’s commitment to a thorough investigation. He stated, “The Coast Guard remains committed to conducting a thorough investigation to ensure all facts are uncovered.” He also provided updates during a Tuesday press conference, noting that the girls were wearing life vests at the time of the accident.

The Sailing Program’s Background

This sailing program, which has been operational since 1927, is known for its emphasis on safety within its camps, which are located in a “very secure area at the Biscayne Bay.” This waterway is a bustling hub, frequented by commercial shipping, recreational boating, sailing clubs, and fishing enthusiasts.

The Miami community grapples with the aftermath of this devastating event, as families and friends mourn the loss of young lives. Experts are calling for enhanced safety measures in boating practices to prevent such tragedies from occurring in the future.

Coping with Grief and Awareness

As the community comes together in mourning, there is also a greater awareness emerging about safety in local waterways. Parents, educators, and officials are urged to remain vigilant and proactive about safety measures to protect children participating in outdoor activities.

Local leaders emphasize that tragedies like this one should serve as a wake-up call for boating safety regulations and education. Continuous advocacy for safer practices on the water remains essential to preventing future incidents.

For families affected, support systems and counseling services will be vital in the healing process as the community mourns the innocent lives lost in this tragic accident.
